Position Title Assistant Vice President of Communications Position Number 897800 School/Division Office of Interactive Media (division) Department Marketing & Communications Full-Time or Part-Time Full-Time Description
Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Assistant Vice President of Communications will craft Hofstra’s story through a strategy of owned and earned media. They will bring news and media relations expertise and serve as a primary contact for local and national media. This position will supervise several functions including media relations, story-driven content creation, internal communications, and social media. The role is both strategic and tactical, leading a department that serves the internal campus community and external audiences. The AVP will provide communications guidance to University leadership and ensure that University messaging is clear and consistent across all platforms and channels.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Supervises the Senior Director of Public Relations, Director of Public Relations, Magazine Editor, Social Media Manager, and the Internal Communications Specialist.
- Leads media relations for the university by developing and executing a local and national media strategy.
- Pitches and promotes the university, faculty, students, alumni, and programs.
- Creates a content strategy including press releases, news stories, magazines, newsletters, and social media.
- Creates a content distribution plan for owned and earned media.
- Sets the standards for storytelling at Hofstra and advise the campus community on storytelling strategy.
- Analyzes and reports on owned and earned media.
- Strategizes with and advises the Vice President and other university leaders on communications management.
- Serves as the central communications resource to the entire campus community through committees, communities of practice, and networking with colleagues.
- Writes and edits speeches, statements, remarks, letters, and op-eds for various faculty, administrators, and board members.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of 8- 10 year prior related experience.
- Strong communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills.
- Expert proficiency in collaborating with executive leaders.
- Experience publishing content on the web.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in higher education, preferred.

Salary/Salary Range $135,000 – $150,000

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience and education.
