Associate Director Center Wrongful Conviction

Job Summary:

The Center on Wrongful Convictions (CWC) is dedicated to identifying and rectifying wrongful convictions and other serious miscarriages of justice. As a key member of the CWC leadership team, the Deputy Director is responsible for strategic planning, administration, fundraising, and outreach and engagement. The Director will also serve as co-counsel on active cases and lead efforts to establish best practices regarding intake processes and case evaluation.

Target hiring range for this position will be between $76,196 – $100,245 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data

Specific Responsibilities :

Strategic Planning
• Develop and implement outreach plans to raise the CWC’s domestic and international profile. Build and maintain local, national, and international professional relationships.
• Implement a strategic approach to development and fundraising opportunities to include major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitation, and in-kind resources that benefit the CWC, Bluhm Legal Clinic, and Northwestern Pritzker School of Law.
• Foster positive relationships and coordinate with faculty and administrators to advance interdisciplinary research and programming at the Center.
• Initiate and nurture effective communication with CWC faculty, directors, and advisory boards.
• Develop a staffing infrastructure to support ongoing growth of the CWC and to effectively implement strategic priorities.
• Serve as a resource and strategic advisor on increasing opportunities for maximizing the impact of the CWC’s work.
• Work closely with Co-Directors to carry out the CWC’s strategic vision. Assess and leverage resources to align efforts and priorities with the Center, Clinic, and Law School.

Administration and Management
• Manage the operations related to fundraising, legal and non-legal events and organizational structure of the CWC.
• Partner with law administration to recruit, hire and manage the performance of CWC staff.
• Manage the case evaluation system. Coach and educate volunteers and pro bono law firm partners on best practices regarding intake processes and case evaluation.
• Oversee the CWC’s budget process and coordinate with law school administration on budgeting and forecasting for the Center.
• Serve as co-counsel on CWC active cases.

Development and Fundraising
• In consultation with law school leadership and programs, create and facilitate a vibrant culture of philanthropy, service, and volunteerism.
• Formulate and execute development and sponsorship strategies that will leverage the national and international visibility of the Center’s work.
• Propose key collaborations with the Clinic and the law school to identify opportunities to integrate strategic goals.
• Develop partnerships with appropriate administrators, faculty members, researchers, and students to fulfill CWC’s stewardship responsibilities.

Outreach and Engagement
• Develop and implement community outreach and engagement strategies across a range of CWC activities, including client representation and service.
• Oversee the development and management of CWC events and programs designed to expand constituent engagement and participation.
• Oversee special projects and volunteer opportunities, including but not limited to law firm relationships and undergraduate interns.
• Collaborate with Co-Directors and external stakeholders to develop and implement a communication plan that promotes the CWC’s brand and the Center’s work.

Minimum Qualifications : (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)
• Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
• Five years of administration, development, marketing, communications, or the equivalent experience.

• Experienced in donor cultivation and fundraising.
