ABOUT THE POSITION
The MK Communications Team seeks an experienced media and public relations professional with a passion for identifying stories, opportunities, and potential partnerships that will highlight the work of MK through earned and sponsored media placements. This position is ideal for a mid to senior-level professional who thrives within collaborative environments where the goal is to turn complex – at times, controversial – ideas into thoughtful and engaging stories for both traditional and digital media.
In partnership with the Chief Communications Officer, the Associate Director for Media Relations will lead and develop strategy within both traditional and digital spaces that yield measurably higher visibility and engagement for the MK brand, while supporting fundraising, advocacy, and general campaign initiatives. He/She/They will work independently in various capacities to coordinate elements needed to encourage meaningful engagement with external audiences that help broaden the reach of MK and inspire action from our community of advocates and supporters. This role will require the candidate to be highly organized, detail-oriented, and deadline driven.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Media and Public Relations
• Serve as point of contact for MK media inquires
• Work across departments to identify and develop newsworthy stories
• Develop and disseminate media pitches that highlight MK services, programs, and events
• Draft, finalize, and disseminate media collateral as needed
• Curate and manage media lists in Cision
• Regularly initiate and steward relationships with local, regional, and national media contacts
Project Management & Strategy Development
• In partnership with the Chief, develop and execute routine media training for MK staff
• Develop media strategy to support programs, advocacy campaigns, fundraising, and general initiatives
• Actively manage media interview requests through completion in partnership with appropriate MK staff and external teams
• Plan, manage, and execute media events as needed in partnership with both internal and external teams
Requirements
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Excellent verbal, writing, and editing skills with exceptional knowledge of AP Style
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field with a minimum of 5 years of related work experience – or – a minimum of 7 years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field
DETAILED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Experience using AP style to draft press releases, media advisories, etc.
• A passion for using content, data, and technology to support the movement to end chronic homelessness
• An ability to translate complex ideas into accessible stories and data for broader audiences
• Experience pitching and securing story placement for both earned and paid media
• Experience establishing and stewarding relationships with local, regional, and national media contacts
• Experience in both crisis management and conflict resolution
• Exceptional project management skills with an ability to carefully prioritize work according to both organizational, and departmental deadlines
• Experience using communications platforms like Cision or Meltwater to build media lists and track engagement (We currently use Cision.)
• Ability to create comprehensive metrics reports based on earned and paid media
• Comfort working with a diverse population, including staff, stakeholders, and guests with a variety of backgrounds, and lived experiences
• Experience using Microsoft 365 Suite
Salary Description
$75,000 – $83,000
