Associate Director – Learning and Instructional Strategies

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Serves as Associate Director of the Office of Learning and Instructional Strategies (OLIS):

High-Quality Instruction:

  • Supports the priorities of the Department by facilitating and leading the work around high-quality instruction;
  • Collaborates with ODE colleagues, local school district staff, local and state education agencies and higher education in the development of a process to support high-quality instruction which includes the implementation of Ohio’s Learning Standards and Model Curriculum;
  • Reviews changing state and federal laws, best practices, educational data and research regarding academic learning standards, curriculum and instruction, evidence-based practices and high-quality instructional materials;
  • Supervises and leads internal staff in the efforts to support districts, teachers and stakeholders with high-quality instruction, including supports on Ohio’s Learning Standards and Model Curriculum and high-quality instructional materials;
  • Supports and serves as curriculum contact in cross-office initiatives;
  • Secures and oversees grants to support work specific to curriculum implementation (e.g., plans, develops and implements internal office policies and procedures as it pertains to grants; facilitates and conducts effective project planning (e.g., monitoring, budget, finance, reports, request for application).

Knowledge, research and content expertise

  • Researching and analyzing information on effective high quality instruction including various instructional programming approaches;
  • Designing evaluation and research questions pertaining to high quality instruction;
  • Conducting a strengths and gaps analysis specific to state and regional support systems to focus on high-quality instruction; and
  • Developing and delivering presentations to staff, districts and professional groups.

Leadership:

  • Directs, develops and implements programs, policies, processes for the Office of Learning and Instructional Strategies;
  • Monitors performance of educational consultant team (e.g., adherence to deadlines, completion or facilitation of processes);
  • Provides assistance as an academic content and performance standards expert for intra- and cross-office initiatives;
  • Determines office strategies for supporting, developing and evaluating professional development that are aligned to adult learning theory and the Ohio Standards for Professional Development;
  • Supports major legislative and State Board of Education initiatives and policies as they arise;
  • Coordinates communication/guidance to the educational community;
  • Assists in the planning and allocation of budgets;
  • Collaborates with staff to develop personal goals and complete annual evaluation cycle;
  • Encourages collaborative teamwork within the Office of Learning and Instructional Strategies, and models effective communication skills and problem-solving techniques.

Performs other related duties as assigned:

  • Attends national, state and regional conferences;
  • Represents the Director as needed in meetings and conferences;
  • Stays current with new communication tools, technologies and strategies;
  • Develops partners in the field that will help open and maintain two–way lines of communications;
  • Participates / represents agency in professional associations;
  • Creates reports and strategic position papers;
  • Provides hands-on assistance in daily office operations;
  • Interviews and recommends job applicants;
  • Conducts performance evaluations;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Leadership.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (e.g., education or related field) and one of the following:
    • 5 years applied experience in implementation and delivery of curriculum and instruction;
    • OR 5 years experience as an educational leader supporting districts, schools and/or educators with professional learning specific to curriculum and instructional strategies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing and implementing policy
  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex roles and responsibilities
  • Systems thinker with creativity and strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills related to educational policy, resource allocation, and program design
  • Exceptional verbal/written communication and presentation skills and a proven ability to build productive relationships with, and communicate complex messages to, a wide variety of stakeholders
  • A strong understanding of Ohio’s educational policy and landscape
