About Housing & Residential Education
The Housing and Residential Education (HRE) staff at the University of Denver provides housing and support services for 2900+ students living within University housing. Housing and Residential Education strives for a community that supports academic achievement and success, personal growth and development, a respectful and inclusive environment which promotes diversity, promotes community service, and fosters leadership development and an engaged staff and student.
Position Summary
The Associate Director of Residential Education serves as a member of Housing and Residential Education’s leadership team and directly reports to the Senior Associate Director of Residential Education. The Associate Director is responsible for implementing a comprehensive residential life education program, with primary oversight of community development in DU’s Residence Halls and Apartments, recruitment and development of professional staff, and student behavioral initiatives for the residential life program.
The Associate Director is responsible for the direct supervision, training, and evaluation of two (2) Assistant Directors, six (6) Resident Directors, seven (7) Graduate Resident Directors, and over 100 student staff. In addition to the essential duties listed, the AD helps execute an overall vision and leadership in the development of a robust academic and social environment for residents, while creating and maintaining a high level of safety, security, and well-being for all residents.
Essential Functions
Residential Education
- Assists with the implementation of the residential education model and student engagement efforts for all residential populations that enhance the student experience and ensure infusion of the 4D experience throughout all aspects of HRE
- Supports assessment efforts within Residential Education, including measuring achievement of student learning outcomes, student success, and student satisfaction
Staff Recruitment, Training, & Development
- Leads recruitment, performance management, and employment transitions of HRE professional and graduate staff
- Provides leadership and oversight of student staff recruitment, selection, and performance management
- Provides oversight of departmental trainings, onboarding, professional development initiatives, and recognition initiatives for HRE’s professional, graduate, and student staff
- Serves as a liaison to Human Resources & Inclusive Excellence
Supervision
- Supervise, train, and evaluate 2 Assistant Directors, and indirectly supervise 6 Resident Directors, 7 Graduate Resident Directors, and 100+ Student Staff
- Facilitate a supportive environment that promotes the professional and personal development of each staff member.
Student Behavior and Conduct
- Leads the direction, design, planning and assessment of student behavioral education, intervention, and prevention efforts
- Serve as a High-Level Case Resolution Officer and appellate for potential violations of the Guide to Residential Living and Honor Code in accordance with Student Rights & Responsibilities (SRR)
- Coordinate, support and update the professional and student staff on-call schedules, protocol, procedures, and manuals.
- Serve as the primary liaison to campus partners regarding student behavioral interventions including Student Rights & Responsibilities (SRR), Student Care and Outreach (SOS), Campus Safety, and Equal Opportunity and Title IX (EOIX)
- Serve as a proxy to the Senior Associate Director of Residential Education on the CARE team.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
- Supports implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the student and staff educational programs
- Promotes a housing community that fosters diversity, equity, social justice and inclusive practices
Duty Responsibilities
- Participate in a 24/7 Senior Administrator on-call and emergency response system for the entire DU residential population; the Senior Administrator On-Call responds to emergency and crisis situations and keeps the Executive Director for HRE and the Student Affairs Executive Leadership team informed of life-threatening emergencies or serious disruptions that may require campus intervention or follow-up
- Manages and coordinates the on-call response, emergency protocol and policy development including professional and student staff on-call schedules, protocol, and resources
Professional Development
- Participate in professional development opportunities sponsored by HRE and the Division of SAIE
- Serve on HRE, division and university committees, facilitate professional development, and additional duties upon request and evaluation of performance
Budgeting Functions
- Provides financial oversight for the development, implementation, and management of assigned areas, while maintaining compliance with University procurement policies and procedures
- Track and approve all financial reconciliation and expenses by the staff in your area
Departmental
- Provide oversight for assigned HRE committees
- Attend events and programs sponsored by the department and/or the Division of Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence
- Serves as proxy for the Senior Associate Director of Residential Education
- Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in student Affairs/College Personnel, Counseling, Social Work or a related area of study
- Five (5) years of progressive post-Master work experience and leadership in housing and residence life
- Three (3) years of supervisory experience with professional, full-time staff
- Demonstrated record of building teams and collaborative partnerships with colleagues and key stakeholders
- Experience designing learning outcomes based on educational programs/models and assessment practices
- Experience designing programs and trainings for and with diverse student and employee populations, and a demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice
- Strong leadership experience
- Periodic availability on weekends and evenings as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Five to seven (5-7) years of post-Master work experience within residence life as well as someone who has demonstrated progressive leadership
- Community programming development experiences
- Demonstrated leadership ability
- Able to work effectively with students and staff of diverse backgrounds and identities
- Supervisory experience

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with some on-call evenings and weekends.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $65,000 – $68,000.
