Hyperallergic is seeking an Associate Editor to join our team in Brooklyn. The ideal candidate is a sharp line editor with some professional experience with the arts and culture beat. Familiarity with the visual art world in particular is preferred.

The Associate Editor’s primary responsibility will be to work on pieces by freelancers and staff writers that have been commissioned by the News Editor and Senior Editor. We are looking for a highly meticulous person who can shepherd a first draft to a near-perfect final draft, whether it’s a timely breaking news story, a review, or a longer feature.

The editor in this role is also expected to bring ideas to the table, actively look for stories, and help cultivate Hyperallergic’s growing roster of sources and writers.

  • Fact-check pieces and flag factual errors
  • Find appropriate images for each article and secure image rights/permissions
  • Stage drafted articles in WordPress, ensuring image captions are formatted according to house style
  • Stay on top of important developments in the arts and culture sector and help develop story ideas

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year of professional editing or reporting experience in arts and culture journalism
  • A deep interest in the intersection of arts and activism and the ability to think beyond traditional ideas of art (memes, visual culture, etc.)
  • Ability to work well on a team, complete tasks under tight deadlines, problem-solve, and communicate effectively with writers on difficult topics
  • Knowledge of AP Stylebook and Chicago Manual of Style; ability to quickly learn and apply in-house style guides
  • Proficiency with Google Docs, Microsoft Word, WordPress, and Adobe programs

We regret that we are unable to consider applicants who require visa sponsorship at this time.
