Why you’ll love this position:

The Bureau of Health Care Analysis and Data Dissemination is seeking an associate research analyst to work on a team involved in collecting and analyzing drug overdose mortality. The analyst will be responsible for mortality data abstraction and entry into SUDORS, which is the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)’s web-based database system for collection of drug overdose mortality data. The position will compile information from both the death certificate and the coroner/medical examiner reports (including toxicology) for this data entry. The analyst will also write programs to produce counts and rates for various geographic and demographic characteristics for drug/opioid/heroin related deaths. In addition, they will respond to data requests from a wide variety of customers, therefore strong communication skills and customer service experience is preferred. The candidate will also assist in the Department’s Drug Overdose Dashboard, which incorporates fatal, nonfatal, and EMS data pertaining to drug overdose and Naloxone utilization.

What you’ll do:

  • Data linkage of death certificate data with coroner/medical examiner reports.
  • Coordinate requesting/receiving coroner/medical examiner reports with the individual local offices in a timely manner.
  • Abstraction of drug overdose death information into the SUDORS database maintained by CDC.
  • Analyze overdose morbidity and mortality data.
  • Respond to data requests relating to drug overdoses.
  • Provide data support for Overdose Data to Action in States grant.
  • Answer ad-hoc data requests.
  • Write and edit reports on various public health topics, in particular indicators related to drug overdose.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree. Transcripts are required. (Substitutions allowed)
  • Experience with spreadsheets and word processing programs such as Excel and Word as well as other PC desktop resources.
  • Experience with SAS or other statistical software and general programming techniques is highly desirable but not required.
  • Interest in data presentation and data visualization software is helpful.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills.
