Real Estate

AB CarVal Investors is established in managing opportunistic global real estate investments in both commercial and residential real estate transactions, as well as real estate-related public debt and equity securities. AB CarVal’s flexible mandate has enabled it to be a provider of capital on transitional assets, construction, and value-add transactions across property types. We have funded over $2.5 billion in real estate debt loan and have also been an active trader of SASB CMBS bonds. With each investment opportunity, AB CarVal applies an in-depth, bottom-up underwriting process focused on underlying business plans and market fundamentals.

AB CarVal is seeking to hire an Associate/Vice President to join the Real Estate Debt Business based in New York.

Today, real estate investments are funded through a range of AB CarVal vehicles, including AB CarVal’s general credit fund. In 2021, we raised $3.6 billion for a new global fund focused on credit and distressed debt, exceeding its initial $3 billion target. There are no limits to the percentage of the fund that can be allocated to real estate and this role will be encouraged to pursue a flexible investment strategy that complements the broader high-yield business. There is mid- to long-term potential to raise a dedicated real estate debt fund.

The role will be part of a global team of investment professionals and will require a highly motivated professional with deep technical and underwriting experience. Given our focus on expanding the real estate portfolio, this role will be expected to bring an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in building a new business, albeit within an established firm.

This position will be in New York and report to Scott Greenfield, Managing Director in New York, while also having strong coordination with the Minneapolis office.

  • Structure and close high-yield debt investments across a variety of commercial properties and portfolios nationally
  • Assist the deal team with complex underwriting, due diligence, and negotiation processes

  • Collaborate with the broader investment team on underwriting, closing loans and portfolio management in debt investments
  • Assist in the credit evaluation and trading efforts of the CMBS strategy.

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of real estate investment experience, ideally focused on originating high-yield debt opportunities across multiple property types and geographies
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related discipline
  • Ability to assist with generating business and deal flow
  • Exceptional analytical skills, financial acumen, and judgment, with the ability to accurately assess the potential risks and rewards associated with various investments
  • Collaborative nature and ability to build productive working relationships with colleagues across the entire organization
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, including a powerful work ethic, high degree of self-motivation, and demonstrable resourcefulness
  • Excellent presentation skills, in both verbal and written communications
  • A passion for continued professional development.
