Office of Research & Innovation, Division of Animal Resources invites applicants to apply for an outstanding opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Vivarium Manager. The Assistant Vivarium Manager is a member of the Division of Animal Resources (DAR) team and provides direct support to the vivarium manager, veterinarians, principal investigators, and research staff in animal research. This position is a Monday-Friday position, some weekend and holiday work are required.
Assistant Vivarium Manager duties include:
- Conduct accurate observations and reporting of animal health and cage elements for multiple species housed within DAR vivarium (food, water, and bedding).
- Provide basic animal husbandry (i.e., cage, water and food change), cage/animal census, and room/vivarium/cage wash housekeeping activities.
- Participate in staff training and employee health and safety programs.
- Follow the VCU Code of conduct to offer a consistently high quality of customer service. – When the Vivarium Manager is not available, will act in their steed.
- When the Vivarium Manager is not available, will act in their stead. ie;
Supervise daily activities within the assigned vivarium / vivarium,
following the applicable federal, state, local and university policies.
Direct daily activities of animal care technicians ensuring that husbandry
tasks are completed correctly and in a timely fashion (e.g., receiving
animals, feeding and watering.
Minimum hiring standards:
- Ability to follow both oral and written instructions
- Significant experience working in an animal care facility, either in laboratory or clinic
- Stand for long periods of time up to one hour to interact with animals, handle animals safely to coexist with animals.
- Be able to properly handle and apply chemicals safely during room cleaning processes; wear any protective clothing or materials as needed.
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills
- Must have excellent customer service skills, written and verbal
communication skills, be proactive in asking questions and seeking
guidance when needed. - Strong problem solving and time management skills are essential,
including ability to prioritize and manage competing priorities and
deadlines. - Minimum of 3 years working with laboratory animals.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and
student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Hiring Standards:
- At least 7 years of service working in a laboratory animal vivarium in
husbandry role
Typical Licensure:
- Preferred candidate will have AALAS certification of ALAT or higher
