General Definition of Work

This is responsible professional work in planning, developing, organizing, and promoting the city’s athletic and recreation programs; does related work as required.

Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Assistant Director of Recreation. Supervision is exercised over a small group of subordinate full time personnel and a large number of part-time and seasonal personnel.

Essential Functions/Duties

NIMS Requirements – Group 2
Plans, directs, and promotes competitive athletic programs for various age groups; 25%Develop, organize, and promote existing youth athletic programs and tournaments; 15%Plans, organizes, and promotes special athletic events involving city-wide competition; 5%5%Establishes and enforces policies with respect to scheduling, safety, registration of participants, payment of game officials, sportsmanship, and discipline;10%Develop, organize, and promote new athletic programs for youth and adult; 5%Recruit, develop, and train game officials and scorekeepers; assign, supervise and evaluate game officials;10%Prepare league schedules keeping records of game results and present to local media for publication; checks eligibility
of participants and settles disputes; 5%Plans, directs, and promotes aquatic programming; 5%Supervises, schedules, and evaluates amusement rides; 5%Perform regular safety checks of athletic facilities and all playground apparatus; 5%Participates in active public relations programs, attends community group meetings and social functions; evaluates programs and makes periodic inspections of competitive activities;5%Publicize athletic events and programs through the media, recommends and purchases athletic equipment, pool equipment, and make budget recommendations; 5%
Performs other tasks as required;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of major sports such as baseball, softball, soccer, football, and basketball and some knowledge of other sports; general knowledge of modern principles and practices of recreation and physical education; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city and community officials, employees, media personnel, volunteer groups and the general public; ability to prepare and maintain records. Thorough knowledge of municipal swimming pool operations.

Education/Experience/Physical Demands/Special Requirements/Additional Information

Education/Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university of recognized standing, with major work in recreation, physical education or related field, and five (5) years minimum professional experience in community or group recreation activities in athletics. Certified Park & Recreational Professional preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 50 lbs,; work in a recreational environment such as a recreation center, athletic field, or park area.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s license.

Ability to obtain certification as Licensed Aquatic Facility Technician.

Ability to obtain certification as Playground Safety Inspector.

Physical Demands:

1. The physical activity of this position includes:

  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.

  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal spoken word levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.
  • Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
