The Ohio Department of Taxation is seeking a professional and passionate candidate to fill our available Attorney 4 position in the Office of Chief Counsel, Division Counsel .
The Ohio Department of Taxation is responsible for the administration of individual and business taxes across the state. As an Attorney 4, you will:
- Act as division counsel by providing legal support and serving as a principal adviser to various areas within the Department on assigned tax types
- Be responsible for research projects that will impact policy decisions, drafting legal ruling requests, administrative rules, information releases, reviewing and drafting proposed legislation, and performing presentations

60% – Provides legal oversight of & support to agency contracts and to the Department’s Vendor Management Office & business units, e.g., Information Services and Budget Divisions, involved in securing goods/services from third party vendors; provides legal advice/support to the Tax Commissioner, Office of Agency Performance’s Internal Audit & Human Resources Divisions, & Department personnel as required; researches & drafts legal opinions, orders, memoranda & other legal documents; analyzes, monitors & drafts legislation, represents Department in variety of legal proceedings as directed; responds to legal inquiries from public & government officials; cooperates with Office of Attorney General on legal issues as required.
30% – Supervises Tax Examiners &/or other employees as assigned; manages lower level staff in preparation & maintenance of tax records & ensures staff follow guidelines in records management; informs upper level management of disciplinary issues relative to interactions between staff & general public; serves as technical resource to subordinates to provide solutions to procedural difficulties & interpretation of case, administrative, & statutory law; assists higher-level management in development/revision of policies/procedures; evaluates employees’ job performance & monitors compliance with departmental work procedures & policies & recommends appropriate personnel actions.
10% – Oversees development & enforcement of policies/procedures affecting the Department’s public records & records management responsibilities; manages the Department’s submissions to the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review (JCARR) including annual reviews as required; serves as liaison to external agencies a required.
Unless required by legislation or union contract, the selected candidate will begin at Pay Grade 14, Step 1 of the Exempt Pay Range Schedule.
