How does it get done?

The Attorney II position provides expert legal advice and counsel to Agency management and staff. This includes interpreting laws, regulations, and policies that may impact the Agency’s operations while maintaining strict confidentiality. Represents the Agency in various state, federal, and administrative forums and tribunals. Reviews and draft contracts, legislation, administrative regulations, policies, and other legal documents. Utilizes experience in collections to assist the Agency in the recovery of money judgments when applicable. Independently prepares cases for trial and appeal. Prepares and draft legal documents, memoranda, briefs, and pleadings. Collaborates effectively with colleagues and other stakeholders in a collegial environment. Demonstrates the ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines, handle a heavy workload, and multitask without compromising work quality or attention to detail. Travels within the state for hearings, meetings, and other legal proceedings as required. Acts as the EO officer for the Agency, with experience in investigating discrimination complaints.

Ideal Candidate

Professional Law Degree: LL.B or J.D. from an accredited law school.
New Mexico Bar Membership: Active membership in the New Mexico bar association, in good standing.
3-5 years of experience in government practice, with a strong understanding of relevant laws and regulations.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision, demonstrating a proactive and self-motivated approach to tasks and assignments.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal personnel effectively.
Experience representing clients in hearings, trials, or appeals, with a proven ability to advocate for the best interests of the client.
Proficiency in reviewing and drafting contracts, legislation, administrative regulations, policies, and other legal documents.
Experience in collections of money judgments to aid the Agency in financial recovery.
Ability to handle sensitive information with utmost confidentiality.

Minimum Qualification

Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law and two (2) years of experience in the practice of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license (Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA). Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
