The purpose of this classification is to perform automotive/equipment functions of an advanced level or specialized nature, which may include mechanical repair of heavy vehicles/equipment, welding and fabrication, and other tasks related to repair and maintenance of automotive/mechanical equipment. Employees in this classification serve as a lead to lower level Automotive/Equipment Technicians for all repairs that are more complex and are expected to possess a higher level of demonstrated expertise in automotive, equipment, and mechanical repair.
Job Summary

Performs complex mechanical repair on engines and other automotive/mechanical equipment.
Performs general welding, stick and mig welding, and fabrication work; prepares metal surfaces for welding work; repairs broken/cracked parts, cuts metal, and welds metal components.
Inspects, tests, and diagnoses problems involving various systems and components of vehicles or equipment, such as mechanical components, electrical components, gasoline/diesel engines, ignition systems, computerized engine controls, electronic fuel injection systems, transmissions, differentials, steering systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, pneumatic systems, drive train systems, engine cooling systems, fuel and air induction systems, charging systems, starting systems, exhaust systems, emission systems, inflatable restraint systems, heating/air conditioning systems, windows, lighting systems, or horns.
Examines vehicles to determine necessary repair or maintenance work; conducts diagnostic computer testing; consults with drivers or equipment operators to obtain input on problems, assist in diagnosing problems, or prevent future problems.
Performs appropriate repair, removal, replacement, rebuilding, or maintenance work on vehicle/equipment systems and components; repairs/replaces mechanical components and electrical components; removes or replaces brakes, brake pads, wheels, steering components, shocks, transmissions, cylinder heads, valve trains, differentials, suspension springs, starters, alternators, water pumps, thermostats, radiators, flywheels, fuel injectors, and other components; turns, replaces, or resurfaces rotors/drums; replaces rings, bearings, and universal joints; repairs/replaces clutches; rebuilds generators and carburetors; relines brakes; removes or replaces engines, engine parts, and engine gaskets; checks engine timing and performance; grinds valves; rebuilds wheel cylinders; replaces disc calipers; installs, removes, repairs or replaces doors, lifts, seats, radios, lights, windows, mirrors, or emergency sirens.
Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; pumps fuel into vehicles; checks fluid levels and replaces fluids as needed; drains/replaces oil; changes/replaces filters and batteries; removes/replaces belts, hoses, fuses, bulbs, and other parts; flushes radiators and coolant systems; replaces spark plugs and wires; lubricates mechanical parts and greases equipment; checks air pressure level of tires; patches holes/punctures in tires; repairs/replaces damaged tires; rotates and balances tires.
Diagnoses and repairs refrigeration system components; performs refrigerant recovery, recycling, and handling.
Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing vehicles and equipment, which may include a service truck, forklift, vehicle lift, hydraulic jack, tire machine, battery charger, torque wrench, welder, cutting torch, drill press, air compressor, generator, pressure washer, air tools, gauges, meters, diagnostic instruments, or mechanic tools.
Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations.
Determines parts needed to conduct repair projects; work performed in association with assigned projects.
Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, washing/cleaning vehicles and equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports accidents and incidents.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, work tickets, parts requisitions, service records, mileage records, timesheets, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, parts request forms, work tickets, parts manuals, service manuals, diagrams, reference materials, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, vendor/suppliers, customers, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Maintains an awareness of new practices, procedures, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
This classification is designated as a safety sensitive position which is subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other drug testing methods as stated in policies adopted by Forsyth County concerning drug and alcohol.
Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in mechanics, automotive/mechanical repair; supplemented by five (5) years of previous experience and/or training that includes mechanics, automotive/mechanical repair, mechanical/engine diagnosis and repair, transmission and brake repair, welding; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must possess or obtain within six (6) months of employment a valid ASE Technician Certification in Brakes.
- Recovery and recycling of refrigerant requires Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery Certification.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
Class F License preferred but not mandatory for hiring.

Personal Leave Accrual
Personal leave shall be accrued as follows:
0 – 4 Years – 20 days per year – 6.16 hours per pay period
5 – 14 Years – 25 days per year – 7.70 hours per pay period
15+Years – 30 days per year – 9.24 hours per pay period

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners offers two dental plans from Delta Dental:

Vision Insurance
The vision plan offered by Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is administered by Aetna and will offer office visit copays for exams, as well as copays for lenses, frames, and contacts.
Basic Life & AD&D Insurance
The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners recognizes the importance of basic life insurance for all of its employees. The Board provides term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) protection for each full-time employee. This is a County-paid benefit.
Disability Insurance – Short Term and Long Term
100% paid by Forsyth County. Eligibility begins date of hire.
Short Term Disability – 60% of weekly earnings to a maximum of $1,000.00 a week. Eligibility begins 14 days after an accident or sickness and has a benefit period of 24 weeks.
Long Term Disability – 60% of monthly earnings to a maximum of $5,000.00 a month. Eligibility begins at 26 weeks to coordinate with the end of Short Term benefits and continues 24 months (Own Occupation).
Additional Life Insurance and AD&D
Rates vary based on amount of coverage selected. Additional life insurance may be purchased for employee, spouse, and children.
Retirement Plan (401K)
Fully vested at five years of employment – 20% graduated vesting annually. Eligible to begin contributions immediately upon hire.
