Why does the job exist?
Performs and operates diagnostics, conducts maintenance, mechanical and electrical repairs on light duty automotive gasoline powered cars and light trucks, as well as up-fitting new Police Vehicles.
How does it get done?
Works primarily in the Espanola shop with occasional field assignments, using hand and powered tools as well as utilizing computerized automotive diagnostic equipment such as a laptop and/or diagnostic scanner.
Who are the customers?
Officers and civilian employees of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.
Ideal Candidate
he Ideal Candidate would be a certified Master Mechanic and have at least two (2) years of experience as an automotive service technician or mechanic in a maintenance facility and/ or repair shop setting. To include having the knowledge and/or prior use of computerized diagnostic equipment.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and one (1) year of experience as an automotive service technician or mechanic in a maintenance facility and/or repair setting, that may include the use of computerized diagnostic equipment. ASE Certifications in 2 systems or ASE Certified in 2 systems within one year of date of hire is required.

Working Conditions
Work outside in varying weather conditions -hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, and environmental allergens; exposure to mechanical parts; precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles. Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and work under pressure next to high-speed traffic in all weather conditions on various types of terrain. Use of hands to finger, handle or feel while performing various assigned duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; bending; squatting; climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling to perform repairs. Able to work in high pressure situations and able to make decisions independently.
