Why does the job exist?

This position will diagnose, repair and overhaul/rebuild light and heavy gasoline, diesel, flexible fueled and electric powered automobiles and ensure all state vehicles are roadworthy, safe and reliable.

How does it get done?

This position is responsible for overseeing the daily maintenance/repair of Transportation Services Division/Motor Pool’s state fleet of 2000 vehicles; supervise three (3) Auto Mechanics, ensure state vehicles are up to date with scheduled maintenance and ensure vehicles are safe and roadworthy. The incumbent acts as liaison with vendors for maintenance & repairs statewide; provides agency fleet coordinators with preventive maintenance information on their fleet; conducts quality assurance audits on contract maintenance providers; ensures maintenance facility is equipped with the current equipment and diagnostic tools.

Who are the customers?

This position services Executive and Judicial agencies.

Ideal Candidate

– Three ASE certifications in any field from an accredited automotive institute.
– Five years as an automotive Mechanic/Technician in a maintenance facility or repair shop setting.
– Experience using shop equipment to include diagnostic equipment.
– Must have and maintain industry accepted level of tools to adequately perform various job assignments.

Minimum Qualification

High School Diploma or Equivalent + ASE Certifications in 2 systems, and two (2) years of experience as an automotive service technician or mechanic in a maintenance facility and/or repair shop setting, including the use of computerized diagnostic equipment. Substitution table applies.

Employment Requirements

Drug testing before hiring. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License free of all restrictions. Must obtain a Defensive Driving Certification within 5 days of hire.

Working Conditions

Lifting over 50 lbs., bending, twisting, working on/in/around vehicles and equipment in a maintenance facility/shop. Constant use of hand tools, power tools, scanners, scopes, alignment equipment, brake lathe, welders; torches; paint equipment. Exposed to exhaust fumes/vapors and associated fuels and petroleum products.
