Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Inspect, repair, and maintain motor vehicles, trailers, and equipment assigned to the Wye Research and Education Center (WREC). Assist with grounds and building maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
Four years progressively responsible experience in servicing, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles or motor equipment.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of the basic principles of operation, basic components, malfunctions, repair practices and preventive maintenance techniques for internal combustion engines including diesel and motor vehicle systems and sub-assemblies.
- Thorough knowledge of the proper use, care and maintenance of standard hand and power tools.
- Skill in the proper use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the automotive trade.
- Skill in and ability to diagnose and correct motor vehicle malfunctions.
- Ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions; to keep simple records and make written reports; to communicate effectively; to work in, on, around, under and over machinery and/or fixed equipment; to work at heights of up to 25 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools and supplies; to exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Base Salary: $46,407
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform services and repairs to a fleet of motor vehicles stationed at the Wye Research and Education Center. Repair brakes, suspension, electronic control systems, fuel systems, engines, transmissions, A/C, paint, and body components. Maintain a record of work performed on each vehicle following an inspection checklist.
- Maintain all equipment including lawnmowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, backhoes, UTV, small tractors, trailers, stump grinders, snow plows, and snow blowers. Weld and work with sheet metal to make repairs and parts if needed. Keep all equipment in good operating condition and ready for use.
- Assist with grounds maintenance duties, including grass mowing, operating weed eater, clearing of fallen trees, leaf and snow removal. Assist in building maintenance, including pressure washing, painting, lamp replacement, etc.
- Rebuild small engines, adjust and tune both 2 and 4 cycle engines, operate diagnostic equipment, and troubleshoot DC electrical systems.
- Maintain a stockroom of supplies, filters, lubricants and fluids. Order necessary repair parts for vehicles and equipment. Reconcile charges on the University Purchasing Card monthly.
