Conduct background investigations of all applicants for jobs with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Department (PCSO), assure applicants are in compliance with hiring standards, and screen out candidates with unsuitable backgrounds for employment in a position of public trust under basic supervision.

TYPICAL CLASSIFICATION ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Conduct background investigations on job applicants, according to Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) policies and procedures, review job application, and assure applicants are accurate and honest, and meet PCSO hiring standards
- Conduct field interviews to verify applicant background, assess the accuracy and completeness of employment application, interview relatives, co-workers, family members, and neighbors regarding the character of the applicant.
- Conduct criminal history records checks, examine applicant information files resident at other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA), check applicant references, and verify employment history.
- Conduct personal interviews with applicants to review and verify application information and clarify inconsistencies.
- Use Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) for truth verification examination of applicant’s information.
- Write background reports on applicants using the information obtained during the investigation of the applicant.
- Compile data, document all investigative procedures, generates report and summaries of findings as required and requested and advise supervisor regarding significant investigative developments.
- Conduct internal investigations as assigned by the Professional Standards/Internal Affairs Unit.
- Assist and interact with Sheriff’s personnel, County departments, outside organizations and businesses, and Federal, state, and local law enforcement organizations.
- Maintain the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the Sheriff’s Office by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
- Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience performing background investigations or investigative type work in law enforcement and/or military agency.
- Terminal Operator Certification for access to Arizona Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIS) within 30 days of hire.
- Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.
- Some in state travel will be required.
- Valid Arizona State Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional technical training and certifications may be required at the direction of the Sheriff.
- Accredited Polygraph certification.
- Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) certification.
- Past/Retired Peace Officer.
Special Requirements:
Must pass a thorough background investigation.

- Knowledge of Arizona laws and regulations governing the release of information from law enforcement records.
- Knowledge of investigative and interrogative procedures and protocols for observation and memorization of details.
- Knowledge of geography, roads, and landmarks of Pinal County.
- Knowledge of principles of records management.
- Skill in interpreting and applying criminal laws to information, evidence, and other investigative data.
- Skill in recognizing suspicious behavior patterns.
- Ability to effectively manage situations requiring diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness, and sound judgment.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and specialized software applications.
- Ability to follow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructions.

- Ability to interact with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. The work also requires the ability to finger, handle, perform repetitive motion, hear, speak, operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment, and demonstrate mental and visual acuity.
