FIRE BATTALION CHIEF (TRAINING)
A professional management position with the Fire Department responsible for managing the Training Division. This administrative staff position works a 40-hour week working in administrative services, training, and safety.
Starting salary $69,934/yr., or commensurate with experience, State annual incentive pay of $4,300 applicable upon certification as a firefighter in Kentucky. $3,000 annual ALS stipend for paramedics also applies. Provided benefits include but are not limited to, health insurance, group life insurance, wellness program, and CERS retirement through Kentucky Retirement Systems. Paid time off includes vacation, sick time, and holidays (for eligible employees).
Examples of Duties
Primary Essential Function(s) include but not limited to:
- Carries out special projects for the Fire Chief.
- Administrative Staff Assignment “General Duties”: General duties of a Battalion Chief assigned as Administrative Staff may, as directed, include but are not limited to: Prepares and/or oversees preparation of reports, documentation, etc.; Enforces all applicable laws and ordinances; Assists with the development, maintenance, and implementation of long range plans, annual objectives, and departmental budget; Addresses employee and public issues, complaints, and requests; Coordinates leave schedules for personnel assigned to designated shift; Investigates and reports violations of Fire Department and/or personnel rules and regulations and recommends appropriate actions; Teaches, demonstrates, and supervises practical work in techniques of fire prevention and suppression to department members and the general public; Assists in preparation and revision of pre-attack plans; Manages training and/or prevention/inspection records; Develops, coordinates, and/or implements training and prevention programs in accordance with state regulations and Fire Department policy and procedures; Coordinates with other agencies on prevention and training, and arranges department training; Investigates causes of fires and other emergency situations; Works with Personnel Department in the recruitment and/or promotional recruitment processes (e.g., coordination/implementation of agility exams, background screenings, etc.); Plans and promotes public education program to promote fire hazard awareness and compliance with fire prevention policies; Reports all activities of assigned unit; May be assigned as an incident commander or other command staff role at emergency incidents; Coordinates and manages fire training facility(ies); Assists employees with professional development plan(s); Develops and implements officer development program(s); Represents Fire Department on various committees, project teams, and/or task forces; Investigates complaints against the Fire Department and/or Fire Department employees.
NOTE: Emergency responses include, but are not limited to: Fire (e.g., House, buildings, cars, dumpsters); Wrecks (e.g., Automobiles, tractor-trailers, trains, planes); Hazardous materials (e.g., Chemical spills, radiation, carbon monoxide detectors); Alarms (e.g., General, sprinkler, malfunctioning, smoke scares, good intent); Water Rescues (e.g., Rivers, lakes, ponds, pools, other waterways); High Angle (e.g., Any incident requiring specialized rope training); Confined space (e.g., Sewers, basements, bins, collapsed buildings); Mutual aid (e.g., Assists other services). Emergency response callback while off duty is to be expected. Must have the ability to reach Fire Station Number 1 or other designated site in timely fashion when called back to duty.
NOTE: Training includes, but is not limited to: Fire suppression; Hazardous Materials – Technician level; Water rescue; Rope rescue; Confined space; Vehicle extrication; Driver’s training; Hydrant testing; Company surveys; Community education; New equipment; Infectious control; First-Aid; CPR; Streets; Hoses; Other training as deemed necessary.
Typical Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS(Required at time of application):
- High School diploma or GED, plus
- Associates degree in Fire Science or job-related field, plus
- 6 yrs. of consecutive full-time hazardous duty service
- Valid driver’s license
If Associates degree is not possessed, an equivalent amount of education and experience may be considered acceptable (e.g., 60 college hours, or 3 years additional full-time firefighting experience, or an equivalent combination thereof).
