Overview:
The Benefits Specialist is responsible for overall day to day administration of APL Logistics’ benefit plans, including health and welfare in a specified region(s). They will also support local HR and the Director, Global Rewards on benefit matters, including projects, communication and benefit changes.
Responsibilities:
- Under limited supervision, manages day to day relationship with all benefit carriers, file feeds and payroll interfaces.
- Works closely with vendors, establishing close working relationships and monitoring compliance with SLA’s.
- Maintains and creates current standard operating procedures.
- Processes employee recognition and tuition reimbursements, as well as watching budget for programs.
- Serves as a subject matter expert for benefit related questions from our employees, and escalates to the Benefits Manager as required.
- To provide support for benefit projects and activities in NAM and LTAM as required
- Assists with legal compliance requirements, including annual filings, audits, and mandated testings.
Key Result Areas:
- Consults with and advises employees on eligibility for insurance, hospitalization, and other benefits including amounts of coverage and claims procedures. Solves problems, escalating more complex cases to the Benefits Manager – including suggesting possible solutions.
- Develops an in-depth understanding of our contracts with benefit and other third-party providers, resolves issues on non-compliance, escalating to the Benefits Manager as appropriate. Liaises with benefit and other third-party providers to support the timely and successful implementation of any changes, including communications.
- Calculates the correct amount of the monthly funding of HSA and ensures it is paid on time. Handles any queries from has regarding membership and fees. Makes sure that all other benefit related payments are administered accurately and on time – including tuition and employee recognition. Provides reports on costs against budget, and reconciles any differences.
- Responsible for the creation and maintenance of an on-line library of standard operating procedures, including producing these either by self or by identifying and involving appropriate subject matter experts and/or interested parties.
- Support HR local teams in benefit matters such as explaining policies, providing solutions to problems raised and communicating minor changes etc.
- Participates in NAM and companywide benefits projects as directed, providing workable suggestions, proof reading etc.

Requirements:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in day to day administration of complex benefits plans, including regular contacts with third party providers, prioritizing workload and problem solving
- Clear communication skills – verbal and written
- Proficiency in Word, Outlook, Power Point
- Advanced excel skills
- Basic knowledge of US Employment legislation relating to benefits, GDPR etc.
- Experience of managing complex questions and problems from internal customers regarding benefit plans.
- Experience of working with HR systems
- Spanish as well as English preferred
- Experience of participating in large scale communications initiatives
- High level of numeracy and attention to detail
Candidates must be within 250 miles of an APL Logistics facility or office.
The hourly wage for this position is $30.00.
