Overview

The Beverage Manager is responsible for assisting the Assistant General Manager (AGM) Catering and the Food & Beverage Director with efficient, professional, and profitable operations of Iowa Events Center (IEC). This position is responsible for managing all activities of operational and beverage function for the Iowa Events Center. Identify, evaluate and develop strategies to increase revenue and guest satisfaction within the beverage services provided at IEC. Provide a high level of event oversight, technical proficiency and operational personnel support to ensure the smooth operation of any assigned event. Assists AGM with overseeing f/t and p/t positions, and ensuring full compliance with state and federal labor laws, sanitation and food-related ordinances, and alcohol service regulations. Actively supervise, coach, counsel, direct, train and mentor employees in meeting company quality standards, and will independently initiate and authorize all employment actions such as hiring, termination, suspension, discipline, promotion and transfer with assistance from HR / Food & Beverage Director.

Responsible for effective management and operation of function related beverage, including event planning support, staff scheduling, room set-up, compliance with food handling policies, safety, employee training and supervision, adherence to budget and cost requirements and any other task assigned by the AGM or Food & Beverage Director. Will provide oversight and resolution responsibility for employee performance issues and actively and independently manage all aspects of employee relations to ensure a positive, harmonious, compliant and cooperative work environment. Assist the AGM with effective management and running of venue catering / concessions operations including event planning support, scheduling, inventory, cash control. Compliance with alcohol service policies including assisting with cut-off situations and/or upset customers as required. Compliance with leaning, safety, guest service, employee/volunteer training and supervision, troubleshooting, closing duties and other tasks as assigned by the AGM.

This is a key position for the effective and profitable operation of the business. The employee must maintain excellent attendance and be available to work a variable full-time, event-driven schedule, which extends to evenings and weekends. Open availability, a professional well-groomed presentation, outstanding interpersonal skills, independent self-direction, and strong technical (computer and POS) aptitude required.

Salary: $55,000 – $60,000yr

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing, developing and mentoring staff of 5-15 full-time and part time beverage employees, including initiating employment actions such as hiring, firing, conflict resolution, and disciplining.
  • Ensures staff members are aware of work place expectations; provide on-going assistance, training and mentoring to event staff promoting a positive, enthusiastic and cooperative workplace environment by working side-by-side with staff; reinforce procedures and practices through repetition; lead by example and provide on-going constructive feedback.
  • Ensure all Spectra and IEC policies, procedures and practices are adhered to, including compliance with alcohol service and food handling / sanitation guidelines, general safety policies and procedures. Report any alcohol service or other compliance issues to the AGM / Food & Beverage Director immediately.
  • Ensure legal, efficient, professional and profitable operation of IEC.
  • Oversee scheduling and labor allocation.
  • Manage venue beverage inventory controls, par levels, and drive the physical inventory process working closely with the AGM in reducing inventory costs, inventory analysis and explanation of variances; monitor beverage costing and margins to ensure accuracy and consistency and assure optimum profitability is achieved, and agreed upon costs are not exceeded.
  • Responsible for setup, teardown, and movement of beverage stands and equipment.
  • Select and create beverage menu selections.
  • Establishes and maintains personal relationships with the client, promoters, vendors and the public that projects the venue in a positive light.
  • Control the elements that determine profit and loss. Set margins and manage the business against projections while making decisions that relate to P & L of the department.
  • Monitor cash handling of all employees.
  • Conduct interviews and conditional offers, onboarding new employees, training program, job fairs, other recruitment opportunities as required.
  • Responsible for the management of all beverage operations before, during and after the event. Duties may include verifying opening inventory, assigning duties to beverage duties to beverage workers, verifying that each location is fully operational, POS monitoring and troubleshooting, guest complaint resolution, cut-offs, training, post-event evaluation, tracking of monetary and product shortages, generating report and data compilation.
  • Responsible for portion control and serving temperatures of all products served.
  • Ensures that all work areas and equipment are clean & functional, beverage products are being properly stored, and utensils are clean.
  • Execute events following Banquet Event Orders (BEO’s) and effectively operate a computer, fax machine, copier, and other office equipment.
  • Ensure work environment is safe and free from harassment or discrimination, collaborate with HR on any raised concerns; immediately address all safety concerns, potential hazards, accidents or incidents.
  • Regularly tour and inspect facilities to ensure guest and employee safety, quality and guest service flow.
  • Support beverage staff, concessions or catering employees and support bartenders as required
  • Willing to cover any position to ensure IEC is fully operational and company standards pertaining to speed of service and guest satisfaction are met; assist with Suites, Restaurant / Lounge, Arena, Concessions as directed by the AGM / Food & Beverage Director.
  • Work closely with vendors / warehouse to ensure all beverage products are accurately received, stocked and organized for distribution.

Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate with employees, co-workers, volunteers, management staff and guests in a clear, professional and courteous manner which fosters a positive, enthusiastic and cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to make sound business/operations decisions (i.e. regarding employee placement, staffing adjustments, and/or respond to technical, product or equipment challenges during and event) quickly and under pressure.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in English.
  • Solid working knowledge of computer applications: Microsoft Office, POS systems, timekeeping systems.
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented, fast-paced, event-driven environment.
  • Possess a thorough working knowledge of all existing event locations: geographical location, equipment, evacuation procedures, adjacent employee and guest areas, and facility access.
  • Possess valid Food Handles Certificate or alcohol service certification as required by management.
  • Possess thorough working knowledge of all applicable sanitation requirements, food preparation guidelines, alcohol service policies, safety standards, etc. pertaining to Spectra venue concessions operations.
  • Ability to calculate basic and complex math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages). As they relate to POS cash/credit transaction, cash reconciliation and product inventory.
  • Ability to handle cash accurately and responsibly.
  • Ability to consistently adhere to the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, ethics and confidentiality.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associates degree or greater in hospitality management, culinary, or related field preferred.
  • One or more years’ experience bartending.
  • Experience training bartenders preferred.
  • Three or more years’ previous supervisory experience in the food & beverage industry, with emphasis on beverage or catering service preferred.

Ability to calculate basic math functions including addition and subtraction, calculations of percentages.

Physical demands:

While performing duties of the job, the employee will constantly stand and walk throughout the large facility; be required to

grasp, fingering manipulation of product, feel and lift. Employee will frequently push, pull, climb, stoop, kneel to reach and

move product or beverage stations. Exposure to loud environment including crowded workspace and an event environment

with up to a thousand or more guests in attendance. Employees will frequently be required to lift up to 50 pounds, push &

pull up to 150 pounds to move beverage product including kegs with or without assistance. Vision requires ability to

constantly adjust focus, peripheral vision, long distance vision, and close vision to handle cash, read documents and

monitor events. Ability to frequently hear or notice communication of others is a loud event environment.

Work environment:

The duties of this position are performed primarily indoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud depending on daily events, especially in situations involving background music or a live band. Employee will work frequently in situations around and monitoring guest’s intoxication. Employee may occasionally assist with cut-off situations involving intoxicated guests. Employees will be required to stand and walk for long periods of 8 hours or more.
