Our Group:
The Chief Data Officer of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Jeff Leek, established the Fred Hutch Data Science Lab (DaSL) to develop and support the overall data strategy for the organization. The mission of the Data Science Lab to ensure an effective data ecosystem at Fred Hutch by developing a modern, well documented, well implemented, overall data strategy that evolves with the needs and capabilities of those leveraging data at Fred Hutch regardless of “where they live” from the clinic to the research groups. We believe focusing on people is critical in building a strong, dynamic community united around using data to improve human health and cancer care. Position Purpose:
The Fred Hutch Data Science Lab (DaSL) is looking for a Biomedical Data Science Researcher to help improve how software is designed, developed, and deployed within and across clinical and research settings. As a Biomedical Data Science Researcher, you will work closely with DaSL staff to design the next generation of biomedical data science infrastructure with a focus on learning from and improving the experience of our end users: cancer and disease researchers, and healthcare providers. This role is a strong fit for someone who likes working in the open source environment, wants to see insights from research put into practice, and passionately cares about the day-to-day experience of end users in a biomedical data science setting.
Responsibilities
- Leads original research investigating and describing the experience of performing biomedical data driven research.
- Conducts interviews with researchers, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to understand their experiences.
- Researches and develops potential solutions to biomedical data science and related concerns; conducts pilot studies that evaluate those potential solutions.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
- B.A, B.S. in computer science, information science, data science, cognitive science, interaction design, sociology, anthropology, organizational psychology, communications, or a related field (M.S or M.A preferred)
- Ability to effectively communicate and share asynchronously with collaborators and DaSL staff using Slack, MS Teams, and other software to support documentation.
- Ability to provide written documentation and communication accessible to multiple audiences and creating broad understanding across groups.
- Experience in communicating collaboratively with researchers to discern their data needs and provide relevant technological expertise.
- Quantitative and qualitative skills sufficient to conduct and present data summaries/synopses
- 5+ years of hands-on data science experience
- Demonstrated rigor and reproducibility through well organized and well documented code
Additional requirements:
- Provide portfolio or case studies in prototyping solutions in scientific data settings (e.g., document or website providing examples demonstrating experience with socio-technical design); highlight individual contributions
Desired Skills or Expertise:
- Experience leading investigations and demonstrate outcomes through a portfolio of original research, e.g., case studies, prototypes, and/or other documented research methods.
- Previous experience in clinical, research, or laboratory environments, collaborating effectively with diverse stakeholders (e.g., data collection in observational studies)
- Proficient in recognizing and addressing clinical and lab challenges and demonstrated ability to create effective solutions.
- Possess expertise in data collection, conducting observational studies, and crafting user personas.
- Experience building technology prototypes using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript OR PowerPoint and Figma OR experience using R/Python.
- Able to interpret basic summary statistics to draw meaningful conclusions.
- Proficient in clear and effective verbal and written communication.
- Technical skills: prior research experience using data collection, observational study, user studies, or other methods of investigation.
This position is based in Seattle and some weekly on-campus component will be required but is considered a hybrid position. The flexibility of on-campus scheduling will be dependent on balancing engagement with current staff and the collaborative requirements of the position with remote work.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $96,532 to $152,584 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
