Position Summary
Manage and oversee the Animal Wellness Program through a comprehensive and holistic approach to animal health, husbandry and data collection and application. Provide strategic leadership in the implementation, oversight and evaluation of the BioPark’s animal wellness program. Significant collaboration with BioPark leadership team including Aquatics Conservation & Operations Manager, Botanic Garden & Heritage Farm Manager, Zoo Manager and the BioPark’s veterinary team. This position will coordinate and lead the BioPark’s multi-disciplinary Animal Wellness Committee which include animal care experts, other BioPark team professionals and external partners. This position will also directly supervise and provide direction to the animal ambassador team.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements
Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in animal behavior, zoology, psychology, or biology; and
Five (5) years’ professional experience in any combination of the following: animal behavioral training, animal enrichment programs, and/or animal wellness program.
Experience working at a comprehensive animal wellness program at an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited institution is preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator’s Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

- Principals, practices and best practice application of operant conditioning methods and their applications in the zoo/aquarium setting
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations related to animal welfare

- Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation
- Advanced methods and techniques of handling assigned animals
