Position Summary
It is the responsibility of the Bio Park Curator to supervise, plan and coordinate a variety of ABQ Bio Park services, activities and operations, including the acquisition, care, husbandry and disposition of ABQ Bio Park animals; to effectively manage reporting staff; the maintenance of animal exhibits and facilities; the provision of educational services to ABQ Bio Park patrons; to coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, outside agencies and the general public; and to provide highly responsible and complex staff assistance to higher level management staff.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biology, marine biology, or aquaculture; and
Five (5) years’ experience in any combination of the following areas:
- freshwater aquatic animal care
- saltwater aquatic animal care
To include two (2) years supervisory experience.
Experience working in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facility, fishery or aquaculture aquatic habitats, or habitat conservation preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator’s Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
Work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
Dependent on position may work on-call rotation.
Preferred Knowledge
- Operational characteristics, services and activities of a Biological Park
- Operations and services of the care and management of living collections, animal well-being, conservation and other similarly related areas
- Theories and applications of biology, ecology or conservation
- Principles of municipal budget preparation and control
- Principles of animal physiology, behavior and classification
- Modern principles and practices of transporting and exhibiting animals
- Safe work procedures when around animals
- Principles of staff supervision, training and performance evaluation
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations regarding the acquisition, disposition, care and transportation of exotic animals

- Demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the ABQ BioPark
- Professionally represent the ABQ BioPark in all interactions with visitors, staff, media and other groups
- Supervise, direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff and/or temporary employees
- Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff
- Oversee the acquisition, care, husbandry and disposition of ABQ BioPark living collections
- Participate in the construction and maintenance of various animal facilities
- Interpret and explain City of Albuquerque ABQ Bio Park policies and procedures
- Respond and Exercise good judgment in cases of animal or staff emergencies
- Serve as an ambassador for the ABQ BioPark and its programs to the media, visitors, staff, the AZA and other outside agencies;
- Analyze and synthesize information with attention to detail and accuracy
- Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other documents
- Communicate clearly and concisely
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
