Graphic Designer, Workman Kids/Algonquin Kids

Summary:

The designer will develop, concept, and create designs for a variety of illustrated book formats for kids, including board books, picture books, chapter books, novels, graphic novels, and activity books. Our dream candidate is an out-of-the-box thinker who would enjoy spending time thinking up brand new formats.

Qualifications

  • A strong portfolio of book and/or print work design
  • 4-7 years of relevant design and/or publishing experience
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects on deadline
  • Strong project management, multitasking, and organized workflow skills, attention to detail, quality, and process
  • Ability to work calmly and maintain high standards under pressure and in the face of time constraints
  • Ability to approach projects with flexibility and resourcefulness
  • Ability to work collaboratively with people at all levels
  • Knowledge of typography, illustration, and photography
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Knowledge of Dropbox workflow a plus

Responsibilities

  • Deliver excellent design, on budget, and on time while maintaining a spirit of cooperation with all departments and contractors (designers and artists)
  • Hire, art direct and manage outside contract designers to create exceptional cover and interior book design
  • Collaborate with in-house designers to manage workloads, mentor young designers and work with the design team
  • Managing, coordinating, and communicating schedules to ensure that our deadlines are met
  • Design covers and interiors from start to finish – can include: title treatments, series logos, developing cover ideas, etc.
  • Hire and manage illustrators, colorist, letterers, and photographers, as needed

The compensation range for this position is $60,000-$65,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location – talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
