Branch Chief (Quality Assurance Branch)

Summary

This position is located in the Quality Assurance Branch of the Criminal Division. The Branch Chief manages the operations of the Quality Assurance Branch and provides supervision, leadership and guidance to the assigned work force to ensure that quality review of judges’ orders regarding release and commitment of defendants are followed.

Duties

Brief Description of Major Duties:

  • Performs quality review of updates to the electronic case management system and the final disposition of cases, and handles matters regarding mental competency and federal designation of prisoners
  • Ensures the smooth coordination of movement of prisoners
  • Provides technical support to agency partners and judicial staff
  • Monitors work of staff for compliance with branch and division standards, and goals
  • Responsible for branch staff management, evaluation, development, and training
  • Conducts research, evaluates policies and procedures, and analyzes operations; makes recommendations for improved branch effectiveness
  • Analyzes and interpret laws, appellate decisions and court procedures and provides updates to judicial officers and staff abreast of current trends and issues
  • Responsible for preparation and submission of monthly and annual operations reports
  • Identifies and addresses training and development needs of the branch
  • Collaborates with managers of other divisions to coordinate mutual work-related programs and objectives

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor’s degree plus five (5) years of experience in a general office, legal office, or court office setting, including experience with applicable Superior Court Rules of Criminal Procedures; and a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a supervisor.

Graduation from the DC Court’s Management Training Program may be substituted for one (1) year of supervisory experience. You must provide documentation of your management training (i.e. copy of certificate) with your application.

Education Substitution:

A master’s degree plus four (4) years of experience in a general office, legal office, or court office setting, including experience with applicable Superior Court Rules of Criminal Procedures; and a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a supervisor.

A law degree plus three (3) years of experience in a general office, legal office, or court office setting, including experience with applicable Superior Court Rules of Criminal Procedures; and a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a supervisor.

    Annual Leave: New full-time employees earn four (4) hours of annual leave biweekly. After three years of service this increases to six (6)hours biweekly, and at 15 years it increases to eight(8)hours biweekly. Most military, federal and District of Columbia government service counts toward the time required to go into the next higher annual leave category. Employees can carry over no more than 240 hours of annual leave into the next leave year.

    Sick Leave is used for personal medical needs, care of a family member, or adoption related purposes. Full-time employees earn four(4)hours of sick leave biweekly. This leave can be accrued without limit.

    In addition to the federal health plans, the DC Courts offer employees supplemental vision and dental plans as well as a commuter transit benefit subsidy, for a maximum of $150 a month. There are 26 pay periods in the year.
