Broadcast Graphics Operator

Overview

The Central Oregon Daily News is looking for a Broadcast Graphics Operator to join their team! In this role, you will be responsible for live daily programming and sports production for KOHD TV ABC and KBNZ TV CBS. The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure viewer loyalty by producing still and animated graphics for on-air and taped portions of television news broadcasts and lifestyle programming using electronic video graphic equipment. Often works with creative videographers, writers, reporters, producers and other production personnel. Good listening and effective communication skills are a must. Must possess adequate drawing, composition skills and the ability to work under tight deadlines and budgets. Work with design software and stay abreast of technological advances. Be able to work flexible hours to accommodate broadcast or client schedules and deadlines.

The pay range listed for this position represents the low and high end of the base compensation range. The actual offer amount will carefully consider multiple factors, such as relevant skills, qualifications, work experience, location and/or competencies that align with the specified role. Certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation such as bonuses and equity awards.

Responsibilities

  • Key information, pictures, and animations into computer equipment to create playlist for daily live broadcast (producer or supervisor to review) with hard deadlines. Familiar with MOS newsroom workflows.
  • The ability to come up with unusual or clever ideas about a given topic or situation, or to develop creative ways to solve a problem.
  • Visualization – The ability to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged. Also, to include the following:
    • Visual Color Discrimination – The ability to match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness. Moreover, arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures).
    • Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
    • The ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
  • Operate live studio graphics/video for news, operating audio mixer for live newscasts.
  • Collaborate and communicate with other departments and team members to ensure client loyalty. Also, to include the following:
    • Show initiative to improve processes and products.
    • Identify and work to prevent, to the extent possible, problems and roadblocks.
    • Demonstrate high ethical standards, strong work ethic with an emphasis on team commitment, shows respect for others, acknowledges, and builds on other ideas, and supports group decisions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree (or higher) -OR- 4+ years professional work experience.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license, insurance and have access to reliable transportation.

Other Qualifications

  • Serve as Technical Director for late newscast and fill in as back up Director as needed.
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced and high stress situations.
  • Ability to complete work in a deadline driven environment.
  • Ability to work a swing shift schedule and be available for on-call in order to capture live events as needed for programming.
  • Understands and supports company branding and goals; including working overtime as needed.
  • Strong demonstrated understanding of spelling and grammar.
  • Experience using the following software:
    • Ross XPression
    • Adobe Creative Cloud Suite
    • (Advanced knowledge) Adobe After Effects
    • (Advanced knowledge) Adobe Photoshop
    • (Advanced knowledge) Adobe Illustrator
    • MS Word
    • MS Excel
    • MS Outlook
    • Macintosh OS
  • Demonstrated creative ability at a high level.
  • Experience designing graphics for news department.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to run live studio graphics and video during newscasts.
  • Ability to run live audio mixer during newscasts.
