The Engineering & Operations Team within Indiana University RTVS is seeking a technically-minded engineering professional to join us as a Broadcast Technician! The selected hire will serve as an integral engineering resource for updating, planning, and support of RTVS service and the Media School and Cuban Center SD/HD/UHD/IP digital video production facilities. Ideally, this hire will have solid production experience and the ability to become capable of fulfilling the requirements of this engineering role within RTVS.

Job Summary

Within our department, the person selected for this role will be required to quickly and efficiently respond to technical issues occurring during live productions/broadcasts, whether an over-the-air broadcast, streaming media, or large arena display presentations. In this position there are frequently changing priorities and productions and maintaining 24/7 broadcast operation is paramount.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists production manager in planning and execution of productions, many times as the solo engineering resource.
  • Serves as technical resource person to the Chief Engineer and Technical Services Manager
  • Manages high-definition remote production packages and oversee regular maintenance and troubleshooting of video production equipment as directed
  • Prepares studio/venue equipment for regular engineering and studio productions, including graphics generator, cameras, jib, teleprompter, switcher, and/or audio
  • Establishes technical procedures and methods, evaluate, and recommend equipment purchases, perform maintenance, instruct technicians, assess quality (including digital), and prepare reports to maintain correct signal parameters.
  • As Event Engineer in Charge (EIC), this person will assist production engineers in proper setup and connection of remote production/broadcast equipment and will ensure routing video/audio/intercom signal are functional and monitored.
    Trains (to some degree) other production engineers within the team on how to utilize and master highly sophisticated equipment (equivalent to equipment used within major national networks).
  • Works directly with students, instructors, and support staff in classroom productions support
  • Other duties related to the work described above and/or as assigned

General Responsibilities

  • Assembles and sets up cameras, audio and video equipment, and all other equipment needed for broadcast production both in studio and location; monitors and operates equipment during production; takes corrective action if problems develop.
  • Repairs broadcast equipment; troubleshoots problems using schematic; locates and procures any needed parts; installs part and tests repaired equipment; performs routine and corrective maintenance on equipment.
  • Inspects, services, and maintains all broadcast equipment including transmitters; ensures that all broadcast equipment is operating up to set standards.
  • Consults with other broadcasting and production staff to ascertain and configure technical and equipment needs for various productions.
  • Provides guidance to lower-level Broadcast Technicians.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in telecommunications, broadcast engineering, or a related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 4 years television broadcast experience

Preferred

  • 2 years spent in broadcast or high-end instructional or industrial television broadcast engineering, including hands-on experience with video switchers, video routers, server and tape machines, digital video effects, video monitors, and cameras.
  • Technical knowledge of broadcast systems software and applications
  • Significant experience with Windows Network Systems
  • Society of Broadcasting Engineers (SBE) or Certified Broadcast Technologist (CBT) certification

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills including a customer service orientation and ability to interact with a wide variety of individuals
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills including ability to manage multiple priorities and deal with project deadlines
  • Knowledge of and experience with NewTek Tricaster and/or Grass Valley/HD video switchers
  • Ability to manage projects and digital workflow in a live production environment
  • Ability to work both independently and closely with producers/directors/engineers with a deadline driven, live, production atmosphere

Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. Ability to move heavy equipment cases and install equipment in racks. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability to ascend and descend a ladder ladder to work on equipment overhead. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Television broadcast production switchers and a field production switcher and associated gear.

In Television Master Control (TMC), a person must be familiar with Utah Scientific Routers, Nverzion, Evertz multi-monitor processor (a must) and various test equipment.

$40,892.80 – $45,884.80 per year dependent upon experience and internal equity.

Work Hours

Requires ability to work shifts during nights, weekends, holidays, and special events. Hours of work during the week vary according to need.
