Department Summary

The only comprehensive accredited journalism program in the Pacific Northwest, the School of Journalism and Communication offers majors in advertising, journalism, media studies, and public relations: Honors Program; science communication and media studies minors; and supports UO’s interdisciplinary Cinema Studies major and Multimedia and Native American Studies minors. The school offers Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in Media Studies and professional master’s degrees in Journalism, Multimedia Journalism, and Strategic Communication. The school supports an innovative undergraduate curriculum in state-of-the-art facilities both in Eugene and Portland. The school offers Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in media studies and professional master’s degrees in journalism, multimedia journalism, and strategic communication. Position Summary

The Building and Operations Manager coordinates, performs, and oversees all aspects of the operations and maintenance of the School of Journalism and Communication’s (SOJC) facilities, in order to provide an exceptional environment for continued academic excellence. This position plays a key role in the direction and execution of space allocation, safety, security, procurement, contracting, and facilities management. In conjunction with the Dean and Associate Dean for Finance and Operations, the Building and Operations Manager oversees planning and space utilization for new and existing buildings. This position oversees renovations, new construction, safety, security; furniture and equipment purchasing, inventory of space, occupancy, and facilities and ensures adherence to maintenance and operating budget. The Building and Operations Manager will serve as the primary liaison with the department’s faculty/staff, facilities management, and external contractors for planning and coordinating major and minor renovation and construction projects; access, safety and security procedures and policies, maintenance, event set-up and break down, space management and operations. This position will be responsible for maintaining a calendar of the scheduled maintenance services, detailed building records (e.g., furniture inventory, key charts, service records, and other metrics to document efficiencies), communicating standards and protocols to SOJC faculty and staff, ensuring facilities are kept clean, orderly and standardized. They will develop training documents, policies, SOP manuals, handbooks, checklists, and other documentation for SOJC building and business operations, and will play a key role in communicating and disseminating the information to faculty and staff.

The Building and Operations Manager reports to the SOJC’s Associate Dean of Finance and Operations.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
• One year of supervisory or lead work experience

• General knowledge of standard building and security practices, and knowledge of hazards and safety precautions and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
• Five years of supervisory experience
• Experience as a facilities operation manager or project manager at a college, university, or multi-facility complex.
• Experience in project management including budget oversight and the ability to work well with outside contractors/vendors, inside trades personnel, faculty, students, administrators, and staff.
