What Your Job Will Be Like

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking an experienced Building Automation Systems Controls Designer to help stand up a new In-House Design Group! This new team will provide Sandia with the internal capability to self-execute design services at Sandia National Labs in New Mexico. We are looking for a detail orientated and teaming individual to support a dynamic group of Architects and Engineers in the development, design, and construction of building and infrastructure projects!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Design and create automated control systems for Facilities building mechanical systems.
  • Use CAD type software packages to create and modify construction drawings.
  • Create and modify operational sequences and controls schematics for building mechanical equipment.
  • Read and interpret construction documents, including drawings, specifications, and contracts.
  • Interpret and apply latest applicable American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards to the design of building control systems.
  • Visit construction sites to perform field inspections of controls and mechanical system installations.
  • Work closely with the Estimation department, Design Manager, and Operations Manager to review the scope and requirements of each project.
  • Coordinate projects to meet delivery dates.
  • Communicate with Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), contractors, and other trades.
  • Coordinate with team members for listing of required materials.
  • Coordinate with team members for permitting and inspection requirements.
  • Actively participate in predesign and review meetings.
  • Identify opportunities for cost-saving and energy savings measures and quality improvement.
  • Adhere to company safety policies and procedures to ensure all duties are performed in a safe and professional manner.

This position is eligible for telecommuting and the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Salary Range

$56,100 – $107,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • High School diploma plus 3 or more years of experience with building automation systems, designing building automation control systems, or other relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Computer Aided Drafting Software (e.g. AutoCAD, Revit)
    • Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q-Level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Associates degree or Bachelors degree in a technology related field.
  • Familiarity with Siemens brand building automation system components and applications, such as Desigo or Apogee, and ability to read and interpret Siemens PPCL control programming code routines.
  • Familiarity with the following: Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDS), Wiring schematics, Sequence of Operations (SOOs), Control Valve schedules, Bill of Material (BOM), and points lists.
  • Certificate of proficiency in Siemens, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Alerton, Automated Logic, or other equivalent building automation system
  • Current Certified Energy Manager certification
  • Experience with the following mechanical equipment: fume hoods, air valves, room pressure monitoring, BTU meters, energy monitoring, lighting controls, demand-controlled ventilation, refrigerant monitoring, central plants, chillers, boilers, pumps, cooling towers, air handling units (AHUs), Fan Coils, variable air volume (VAVs).
  • Experience with commercial construction projects, including processes and methods.
  • Demonstrated experience working with architects, engineers, developers, contractors and building owners.
  • Analytical, reasoning, and communication skills necessary to identify and resolve building automation system problems.

About Our Team

Our team provides architectural and design services for the division and for Sandia projects. We offer programmatic equipment installations and analyses for Sandia’s critical turnaround initiatives quickly and effectively, which allows Facilities to increase its capacity to deliver design services with more agility.
