Description
The St. Louis County Department of Transportation and Public Works seeks a well experienced Building Systems Master Mechanic that can perform skilled journeyman level work in assigned facility and lead workers providing mechanical and maintenance work in all facilities outside normal business hours on an on call basis.
The typical starting salary range is between $26.33-$31.60 hourly depending upon the candidates qualifications as well as budgetary considerations. This position will share on-call duties for all buildings after hours. Each person will average being on-call for 2 months out of the year. There will be building cross-training, as needed.
Administration Building
41 South Central 1st Shift working 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. This position is required to be on call on a rotating basis.
District 2
11201 Schaefer Drive Maryland Heights 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. This position is required to be on call on a rotating basis.
Examples of Duties
Provide mechanical and maintenance support and repair and lead workers in all County facilities including nights, weekends, and holidays on an on-call basis.
Perform Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), electrical and/or plumbing maintenance, repair or installation work.
Perform welding and sheet metal fabrication repair and maintenance.
Provide on the job training for lower level employees and review work for accuracy.
Monitor and obtain supplies and equipment to ensure the availability of inventory for a designated work area.
Serve as backup for site or project foreman duties.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Equivalent to technical school plus four years of related electrical and heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) experience.
Possession of a valid Drivers License.
Possession of a Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification (MAC or ASE).
Some positions require asbestos worker certification.
EQUIPMENT USED: (Illustrative examples) acetylene torch; automobile, van, light truck(up to 2 ½ tons); come along; cutoff saws; diamond drills; discs; drill press; drills; electric arc welder; grinder; hammer; hand saw; HVAC tools (i.e., refrigeration gauges, vacuum pump, leak detector, temperature sensing monitor); jackhammer; manlift; pipe cutter and threading machine; pneumatic equipment; power equipment; propane torch; soldering equipment; and thermo heat gun.

ACCOUNTABILITY: Work is inspected for quantity or rate of production, and quality of performance, through observation of obtained results.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Balance, bend at waist, climb or work on scaffolding, ladders, stairs, crawl, exposure to dust/dirt, fumes, and hazardous materials, kneel, lift, push/pull, reach above
shoulder level, squat, stand for long periods, stoop, walk for long periods; work from manlift; work in extreme temperatures (heat/cold), and work out of doors in inclement weather.

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant’s education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant’s earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
