Why does the job exist?
This position will perform diagnostics and repairs of light automotive gasoline and heavy-duty diesel equipment. This position be required to travel throughout the District Five area.
How does it get done?
Incumbent will diagnose problems, purchase parts, create work orders, maintain a file system, and close out tickets.
Who are the customers?
Internal New Mexico Department of Transportation employees.
Ideal Candidate
The Ideal candidate will have experience in:
-Obtaining mechanic parts;
-The ability to diagnosis equipment;
-Be proficient in utilizing computers; and
-Creating purchase orders.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and Post-Secondary Certificates for specialized mechanic training and one (1) year of experience and proficiency in diagnosing and repair of light and heavy equipment to include gas and diesel engines, major engine, transmission, drivability, hydraulic and electrical system diagnostics, repair, and overhaul of these systems. Experience to include preventative maintenance, brakes, air systems, suspension, Ability to diagnose and test sensors utilizing diagnostic equipment, and/or experience in fabrication and welding experience. Management shop, and/or lead worker experience may be required. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
This position is designated as safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License at time of interview. Tanker endorsement may be required. A pre-employment background investigation is required. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and drug test and is conditional pending results. Business and/or personal reference checks and driver’s license verification are also required and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed outside in varying weather conditions; work irregular hours; subject to call out for emergencies; the incumbent must use computer based diagnostic equipment, read and understand hydraulic schematics and perform necessary repairs with hydraulic gauges. Frequently lift up to 50 pounds & occasionally lift and carry up to 90 pounds. This position requires frequent travel with overnight stays and maybe required to travel District Wide. Possible geographic location change. Must be available to respond to emergency call outs on short notice.
