About the Child and Adult Care Food Program:
The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federal program that provides reimbursements for nutritious meals and snacks to eligible children and adults who are enrolled for care at participating child care centers, day care homes, and adult day care centers. CACFP also provides reimbursements for meals served to children and youth participating in afterschool care programs, children residing in emergency shelters, and adults over the age of 60 or living with a disability and enrolled in day care facilities.
Salary:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $59,800. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
Role Overview:
This position serves counties in central and east-central Indiana.
The CACFP Field Specialist works with division staff and management to develop and implement policies and best practices for CACFP. You will determine non-compliance, issue corrective-action determinations, and provide program assistance to correct problems with Program administration. You will also provide program assistance, nutrition education, and training to institutions that request training or demonstrate a need for training. Field Specialists are assigned a specific territory within the state. The territory borders can fluctuate depending on the number of sponsors within a geographic area and the number of Field Specialists.
Key outcomes for this role are:
- Serve as the DOE Division of School and Community Nutrition (SCN) to organizations participating in the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program
- Review, analyze, and evaluate existing and proposed USDA Child and Adult Care Food Programs
- Provide technical assistance and consultation to sponsors regarding USDA regulations, policies, and instructions
- Provide local and regional training and workshops on program operations, nutrition education, and finance and recordkeeping
- Prepare and submit written reports as prescribed by the supervisor
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with sponsor agencies, administrators, staff, teachers, parents, children, interested service/civic groups, and governmental agencies
- Collaborate with appropriate professionals regarding nutrition education research and resource materials related to Child Nutrition Programs
- Update SCN Director and CACFP Assistant Director on current work status and priorities as needed or directed
- Report on the current status of work, priorities, and problems
- Plan a work schedule to complete all assigned reviews
- Assist in approving and renewing program operator agreements with IDOE
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Perform audits to determine if businesses are operating within the scope of applicable State law.
- Perform audits as assigned by reviewing various records as they pertain to the assigned functions.
- Prepare current ratio and balance sheet reports on licensed firms as assigned by completing an audit of the firm’s business records and confirming balances.
- Submit written and oral reports of audit findings to the agency.
- Assist and service various entities in the license application process as assigned.
- Provide the Director and the agency with recommendations of business status and solvency.
- Compile information for potential criminal prosecution.
- Testify as necessary at legal proceedings as a field auditor.
- Represent the agency in business relations within the state.

What You’ll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
- Knowledge and skill typically acquired through a bachelor’s degree, related academic training and relevant work experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree where appropriate.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret applicable state and federal regulations.
- Specialized knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting, business management, and economics.
- Ability to use computers and familiarity with basic data entry, word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple projects.
- Ability to work independently and with others as needed.
- Maintain all applicable safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to travel extensively within the state with some nights away from home to conduct audits.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
