Position Summary
To assist the Food Service Director and Chef in preparing and serving nutritious meals while maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen and dishwashing area according to Health Department guidelines and regulations. Camp Lakota is a Girl Scout overnight camp that serves girls in grades 2-12. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
Essential Job Functions
Assist in routine sanitation of the kitchen, dining hall, and related equipment.
- Wash all dishes, serving and preparation equipment, and utensils according to regulated washing methods and temperatures.
- Clean, organize, and maintain all food-preparation and storage areas.
- Reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as indicated through the camps procedures.
- Collect and dispose trash in kitchen and dining hall areas following camps procedures.
Assist in the daily operations of the camp food service.
- Assist in the preparation of food as directed by the Food Service Director and Chef.
- Set up food, supplies, and utensils for dining hall distribution.
- Ensure that all food and leftovers are stored at proper temperature.
Assist in the preparation and packaging of food for use outside the camp dining hall.
- Work with chef and other staff in reviewing pack-out requests to ensure adequate and accurate amounts and variety.
- Prepare and store pack-out food according to camp and health code procedures.
- Advise staff on equipment and any preparation materials needed for identified menu choices.
Food Service/Kitchen Assistants have a designated relationship with their supervisor, the Food Service Director, work daily with Chefs, and through them may relate directly or indirectly to Camp Staff and Counselors regarding programmatic camp and staff needs.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Completion of high school or equivalent.
- Must have or be able to obtain Kern County approved ServSafe Certificate prior to first day of work.
- Demonstrated experience with food prep and general kitchen experience preferred.
- Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR prior to first day of work.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Work effectively in a team setting and in close proximity to others.
- Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.
- Ability to live onsite for the duration of the camp season.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Operate kitchen equipment according to safe recommended methods.
- Frequently moves food from deliveries into and around the kitchen, trays of dishes, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Communicates and works with all ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
- Observes camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Needs to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
- Constantly responds appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Needs to traverse and move several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
- Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
- Needs to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation.
- Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and work flexible hours.
- Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
