Description of Job
The Work Unit:
The Colorado Central Cancer Registry (CCCR) exists to provide a comprehensive statewide cancer surveillance system for Colorado. The CCCR is the statutory (C.R.S. 25-1.5-101, BOH regulation 6 CCCR 1009-3) regulatory entity overseeing mandatory cancer reporting. Components of the surveillance system include collecting and maintaining patient demographic data and detailed clinical cancer data, monitoring state cancer rates, performing environmental health studies, providing data for and assisting with clinical and cancer epidemiology research, identifying areas of the state in need of cancer control activities, and providing a training program for tumor registry professionals in Colorado.

The Position:

This position performs regular and ongoing data quality tests to ensure that Colorado cancer data received from multiple sources are complete, accurate, and fit for use in directing public health policy, planning, cancer research, environmental studies, and cancer control programming and evaluation. This position ensures that hospital tumor registry programs in Colorado comply with cancer reporting standards, laws, and regulations.

This position interprets complex medical information to determine case reportability and accuracy. Position will review medical records, interpret complex oncology information, synthesize the data, assign codes, and enter summary text information and coded data into the cancer registry database. The position provides technical assistance and information related to cancer surveillance to internal and external customers.

This position is responsible for overall data quality assurance and consolidating multiple case reports for the same patient and cancer diagnosis. Position uses multiple techniques to assess data quality: analyzing medical data and abstracted documentation submitted by hospitals, treatment centers, and physicians; descriptive statistics; computerized edit checking; structured data quality audits. This position also performs primary data collection from critical access hospitals through on-site visits or through remote access into the hospital’s electronic health record to ensure that surveillance data are complete.

Attends meetings, serves on task forces or teams, completes projects, and performs other duties.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered for this position, you must meet one of the following options for consideration. This position requires national certification as a tumor registrar (CTR) or be CTR-Eligible: successful completion of the course work in the Cancer Registry Management Program.

Plus any of the following three options listed below.

(OPTION 1) Experience Substitution
Six years of full- time professional experience in health surveillance, public health or health
related organization, including at least one (1) year of experience working in a cancer
registry.
OR
(OPTION 2)
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in biology,
chemistry, epidemiology, nursing, public health, or a closely related healthcare field.
AND
Two years of full- time professional experience in (a hospital Cancer Registry) health
surveillance and case finding, abstracting, quality management, synthesizing and coding
medical data.
OR
(OPTION 3) Advanced Education Substitution
A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry,
epidemiology, nursing, public health, or a closely related healthcare field will substitute for
the required experience on a year-for-year basis, including one (1) year experience working
in a cancer registry. An Associate’s degree in a health related field can be used as a substitution for experience on a year for year basis.”
