JOB TITLE: Career Advisor

ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: Workforce & Social Services

SUPERVISOR: WSS Director

SALARY RANGE: $14.00- $18.00

FLSA: Non-Exempt

ALL FULL TIME POSITIONS: In addition to your pay, your salary also includes Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance. The Biweekly deduction from employee paycheck is $40.00 for Employee Only, $95.00 Employee plus Children, $120.00 Employee plus Spouse, and $140.00 Employee plus family.

JOB SUMMARY: The Career Advisor will work directly with students to provide career discovery, planning, interview skills, resume writing and more. The Career Advisor will use strong interpersonal communication skills to coach and guide students, employ Case Management practices, and work one-on-one with individual students, as a mentor / facilitator helping students choose the best path to shape their futures. Students will be offered information to make education and career decision based on what possibilities exist in the immediate area to gain employment in high skill/ high wage / and in-demand industry sectors or occupations. The Career Advisor will work with students to secure financial assistance to pursue necessary degrees, certificate, or other industry-recognized qualifications necessary for employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide advisement to Native American students in search of individualized education advice or scholarship help, regardless of age.
  • Help participants evaluate their abilities and interests, overcome challenges and obstacles, and develop necessary skills. Aid students in building educational path to future career.
  • Guide students in determining their interests and abilities using a wide range of methods, such as aptitude assessments, interviews and planning materials
  • Counsel individual learners, working with them to aid in the development of both hard and soft skills
  • Develop helpful resources to prepare students for success in educational path to a successful career.
  • Track and analyze data to show program success and return on student investment.
  • Work with students to overcome issues that could undermine their academic or career success
  • Resolve student issues by clarifying; determining the cause of the problem, selecting and explaining the best solution to solve the problem, expediting correction or adjustment, and following up to ensure resolution.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with educational institutions and tribes in order to best assist.
  • Assist participants in learning how to job hunt, including associated activities such as interviewing, writing resumes and crafting cover letters.
  • Conduct group workshops on a variety of topics using available employment databases and career development resources, researching employment opportunities and the educational training or certifications needed.
  • Help students craft a long-term plan for reaching their career objectives
  • Connect learners to additional resources such as financial aid, vocational training, and other supportive services as appropriate.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform other duties and projects as required by Administration and Management

PREFERABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree with focus in education or education-related field.
  • Meaningful experience working in educational institutions, financial aid, or Native American counseling or a related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of higher education practices and policies, especially as they pertain to Native American students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR CONSIDERATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent work experience.
  • Must possess excellent verbal communication skills, demonstrated writing abilities, and research skills.
  • Must possess intermediate knowledge of computer and Microsoft programs and software.
  • Must be comfortable speaking and presenting information to large groups.
  • Must be capable of maintaining a compassionate, empathetic, helpful and professional attitude under high pressure.
  • Must be able to relate to students of all ages and backgrounds and work with a diverse group of personnel.
  • Must be willing to adapt to changing demands as needed.
  • Must possess ability to function openly, constructively, and effectively in team-oriented assignments.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The Career Advisor will do moderate lifting and reaching as might be expected in an office environment. The preponderance of physical exertion will be spent in prolonged periods of time working at the computer.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Location: an office setting with a climate-controlled environment for the majority.
  • In general, 8 hours/5 days a week though additional time on evenings and weekends may occasionally be required for events or activities.
  • Status: Full-time personnel
  • Travel: Some travel required. Must be insurable with valid Oklahoma State issued Driver’s License.
  • Position is grant funded.
