Title: Project Mohala Huaka’i Coordinator

Full time/Part time: Part-time, no more than 19 hours/week

Temporary/Permanent: Temporary

Other Conditions: Casual Hire temporary appointment is expected to begin June 16, 2023 or soon thereafter. Not to exceed 89 days. Continuation is dependent on satisfactory performance, program needs and availability of funding.

Duties:

  1. Coordinates huaka’i (fieldtrips) for early college program for Hawaii high school students in partnership with Lili’uokalani Trust, Youth Development. Organizes and facilitates huaka’i to wahi pana (storied places) throughout the island. Assists with the overall operation of the Project Mohala Program at the UH-Hilo campus.
  2. Plans each huaka’i (logistics) and the curriculum for each excursion. Prepares mo’olelo to share at each wahi pana as well as activities suited to each location.
  3. Supervises students and assigns responsibilities to peer-mentor supports for each huaka’i.
  4. Communicates with project director, Lili’uokalani Trust staff, faculty, students and peer-mentors to organize the program experience.
  5. Supervises Project Mohala Program Facilitator.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with youth and/or engaging in community projects.
  • Knowledge of Hawai’i Island history/mo’olelo, communities, UH-Hilo academic programs and Lili’uokalani Trust programs.
  • Experience organizing and planning group activities.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education, History, or Hawaiian Studies. Teaching experience or advising experience with Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander students.
  • Experience organizing large-group huaka’i (fieldtrips) to locations on Hawai’i Island.
