Overview
Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation’s top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
The Environmental Health and Safety Department directs the development and implementation of hospital regulatory and accreditation compliance programming in the areas of Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health, Workers Compensation, Emergency Preparedness and Licensing and Accreditation. This department acts on behalf of Barnes-Jewish Hospital as an external liaison to all federal, state and municipal regulatory agencies which mandate and enforce worker and environmental health and safety laws. The department works directly with these agencies in the areas of strategic planning, policy development, documentation, permitting, reporting and audits. The department also leads the multi-disciplinary effort of hazard facility surveillance, risk management, data collection, analysis and continuous quality improvement in the areas of Life Safety, Critical Utilities, Public Safety, Emergency Response, Hazardous Materials, Waste Management and Injury Prevention. The department shares the responsibilities of Radiation Safety Compliance Program with WUSM Radiation Safety Department. The Department of Environmental Health and Safety coordinates where applicable safety activities with Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis Children’s Hospital, Barnes-Jewish Extended Care and Orthopedic Center. Also, within the department’s scope is the collaboration with project management teams for new/ongoing construction and renovation, acting in the role of the duly authorized safety officer of Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Performs a variety of food service production activities such as pre-preparation and preparation of hot and cold foods for patient services, retail and catering operations following all dietary requirements. Properly handles and stores food per applicable regulatory requirements.
