JOB TITLE: Cemetery Maintenance Technician
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: CRE/Cemetery
SUPERVISOR: Cemetery Manager
SALARY: $35,083 to $42,099 annually
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
The Cemetery Maintenance Technician will complete all tasks in burial operations within the City of Cheyenne Cemetery Complex while under supervision. When not conducting funeral operations, this position will be tasked with the maintenance, repair, and modification of all grave sites, turf, facilities, and equipment within the Cemetery Complex. The technician will also work closely with contractors, other divisions within the city, grieving families, general public, and assist with irrigation repairs.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Preform skilled andor semi-skilled tasks involving all aspects of burial operations to include but, not limited to opening and closing of burial spaces, burial equipment set-up and tear down, placement of burial receptacles, monument repositioning, and grave space repair.
- Ability to, or ability to learn to, regularly operate equipment such as but not limited to backhoes, non-CDL rated dump trucks, mid-sized tractors, 3-point hitch attachments, mechanized sweepers, heavy duty utility vehicles, snowplows, snow blowers, trailer mounted air compressors, zero turn and push mowers, gas trimmers, hedge clippers, trenchers, and light duty vehicles with and without a trailer.
- Ability to, or ability to learn to, understand, generate, and utilize detailed records, maps, and measurements of grave space locations.
- Ability to, or ability to learn to, assist in processing burial Request for Service work orders that include visual verification of grave space by utilizing self-made maps from records searches and validating who has legal authority for burial and processing of authenticated Request for Service forms.
- Ability to physically and mentally perform, under supervision, disinurnments and disinterments of human remains of various ages, in diverse burial containers in various conditions and conduct burial operations during a funeral service with grieving family present.
- Ability to work closely with funeral homes and directors, contractors, grieving families, distraught clientele, other divisions within the city, and public in a constructive demeanor. Be a role model/mentor for other employees within the City.
- Ability to, or the ability to learn to, establish the proper location for monument installations for contractors.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ability to, or the ability to learn to, including but not limited to cultivation of ornamental turf, trimming of shrubs, mowing, and trimming of grass with various equipment, apply fertilizer and pesticides, perform minor maintenance, repair, and cleaning of Complex facilities, accessories, and equipment.
- Ability to assist in removal of snow from all parts of the Cemetery Complex by means of machinery or hand.
- Assist in Cemetery Complex irrigation maintenance and repairs as required.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
- Assist other City Divisions as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of basic plant and turf cultivation.
- Ability to learn basic plumbing and irrigation skills.
- Knowledge of rudimentary facilities maintenance and cleanliness.
- Ability to operate and understand basic computer programs such as: Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Outlook, word processors, and internet browsers.
- Ability to operate basic turf maintenance equipment and hand tools.
- Knowledge of basic occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Ability to safely work around trenches and moving machinery.
- Knowledge of basic maintenance of motor vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions native to Southeastern Wyoming.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.
- Perform work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to develop a professional rapport with contractors and funeral homes.
- Develop a cooperative attitude towards the public, coworkers, and contractors.
- Ability to work limited amounts of overtime and some Saturdays.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
Required:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Wyoming Class C Drivers License or equivalent.
- Maintain an acceptable driving record under Wyoming Association of Risk Management (WARM) standards.
- Minimum possession of Wyoming Pesticide Applicators License, 903A (Weed Control) within one year of hire date.
Preferred:
Any of the following experience in cemetery burial practices, trenching, professional turf management, herbicide application, irrigation maintenance, customer service, or surveying
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
Working Environment:
Work closely with others in an outdoor environment as well as irregular work hours; working with machinery, exposure to noise, dust, grease, fumes, gases and inclement weather, communicate with grieving persons, often under extreme emotional distress.
