The Work You Will Do:
The Chemist II, 37020836, is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Chemistry Program, Nutrients section, in Tallahassee and will be responsible for the preparation and analysis of environmental samples for inorganic components. This work is of importance for water quality assessment and restoration projects for the State of Florida.

DEAR team members provide the department and other resource agencies with the highest quality laboratory services available; provide technical support to the department and the public regarding water quality analysis and data quality assurance (QA); manage water quality data repositories for data storage and use by the department, other agencies and the public; and work together to monitor and assess Florida’s surface water and groundwater quality, develop strategies to reduce pollution, and work closely with local stakeholders to implement comprehensive restoration strategies that improve the lives of all Floridians and preserve aquatic resources for generations to come.

The work location of this position is in Tallahassee (Leon County), Florida. The city hosts the Capital of Florida and seat of state government. Tallahassee is located just 22 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, which is home to some of the world’s top beaches. Your Specific Responsibilities:
The duties of this position involve the preparation and analysis of environmental samples for major anions and cations using USEPA approved procedures. Other duties include data entry functions, record keeping and maintenance. Medical Monitoring may be required.
Prepares and analyzes samples for major anions and cations using segmented and continuous flow analysis, discrete analyzers and other approved methods, within laboratory turnaround times.
Performs analyses in accordance with the Laboratory Quality Assurance Plan. Maintains calibration standards and quality control reference standards as well as reagents and supplies for inorganic analyses. Maintains clean, neat and organized workspaces.
Performs calculations and data entry functions for analytical results. Calculates and documents the results of quality control data. Maintains standard operating procedures for current analytical methods.
Performs and documents instrument maintenance, troubleshooting and repair. Assists junior level chemists and technicians with method and instrument troubleshooting.
Develops new analytical procedures for Inorganic compounds. Performs training of new personnel. Provides analytical support in other work areas as request by the supervisor.
Perform other duties as directed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the tenninology, principles and techniques of chemical research, analysis or testing.
- Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in laboratory testing and analysis.
- Knowledge of the methods of data collection.
- Skill in the use of scientific laboratory equipment.
- Ability to collect, record, and analyze scientific data relating to chemistry.
- Ability to conduct chemical research, tests, and analyses using scientific methods and techniques.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences or engineering and one years of relevant professional experience. Professional experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
