Chief Building Inspector – Manager 3

Position Description

The Inspection Services Division’s top priority is the safety of the built environment and Seattle’s residents. The Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections (SDCI) has an exciting Chief Building Inspector (Manager 3) opportunity available. This role is key to program development and administration of all aspects of the Seattle Building Code. This leader will include directing, planning, and analyzing practices and programs that support strong internal teams. Collaboration within and across SDCI divisions, and other City Departments, with a demonstrated understanding of The City of Seattle’s and our community’s challenges is also required. This manager must understand the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative and work to incorporate and promote equity and inclusion in all areas of work and employee engagement.

Job Responsibilities

The Chief Building Inspector (Manager 3) will:

  • Provide high level technical guidance with Accela, identify, and implement changes in workflow as it relates to our business processes.
  • Provide high level technical expertise with Building, Mechanical and Site Inspection codes.
  • Participate in and facilitate Inspections Services response in emergencies and participate in disaster readiness in conjunction with EOC (Emergency Operations Center.)
  • Assess the communication needs within work groups as well as customer needs and develop strategies for removing barriers to communication.
  • Serve as the technical expert or key contributor involving independent technical decisions in alignment with the Building Official.
  • Serve as one of the principal advisors to the Director of Inspection Services.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Please have one or more of the qualifications listed below or a combination of other education, training or experience that provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

  • A bachelor’s degree in construction management, public administration, electrical engineering, or a related field or a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by the work.
  • Five years of supervisory and/or lead experience.
  • Five years of experience in inspections: Building, Electrical, Site, Mechanical, Elevator, Fire or Code Compliance
  • Understanding of codes and code interpretation, ordinances, and rules in the field of construction, including Building, Site, Mechanical, Fire and Noise

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Building Official certification from ICC or Master Code Professional.
  • Effective development of programmatic changes and analysis of outcome.
  • Demonstrated understanding and/or proof of budget, expense, and cost allocations on a large scale.

The full salary range for this position is $78.12 – $78.12 per hour.
