POSITION: Chief Custodian I – Essential Personnel
LOCATION: William Penn High School & N-3 Building

COMPENSATION: Chief’s Salary Scale
Potential Salary Range: $47,518 to $65,816 (See Chief I Salary Range for Experience Years and Applicable Stipends)
POSITION GOAL:
Provide leadership in the supervision of the cleaning, minor and preventative maintenance of the school building and grounds. Oversees custodial services that provide clean, comfortable, healthy, safe and attractive buildings for students, staff and visitors. Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. but may vary as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
- Physical ability to perform essential functions of this position. The employee must be able to lift, push and/or move up to 50 pounds. He/she must also be able to work in extreme temperatures and/or weather conditions. This job requires repetitive stooping, twisting and bending.
- Neat and clean appearance.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both written and orally, with others.
- Willingness to accept additional responsibilities.
- Able to get along with adults and students.
- Good moral character, honest, dependable, and courteous.
- Ability to follow instructions and procedures; must possess quality of inquiring before taking action on items with which one is not familiar.
- Demonstrated ability to read basic operating instructions, write reports and maintain records.
- Use of technology as it relates to the position (email, data management, work order system, etc.)
- A valid driver’s license is desirable
- Acceptable Criminal Background Report and no entries on Child Abuse Registry
- Ability to supervise the operation and maintenance of low pressure boilers and oil-fired boilers.
- Prefer six years of successful experience as a custodian fireman and/or chief custodian or the equivalent in custodial and/or maintenance supervisor experience in other institutions or firms.
- Must be able to work beyond regular hours when required to see that various activities and custodial assignments are properly handled.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities related to the District. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Supervises all custodians assigned to the building.
- Performs limited preventative maintenance and mechanical work as required.
- Composes and delivers performs annual evaluations of all custodians in the building.
- Assists in the hiring, discipling, and dismissal of custodians under his/her supervision.
- Maintains a written housecleaning and maintenance schedule.
- Makes inspections to insure that housecleaning and maintenance schedules are performed on the day and night shifts.
- Trains all new custodians under his/her supervision on tasks specific to the building.
- Checks all fire and safety equipment in the school and submits reports to proper school official.
- Updates continuously his/her working knowledge of systems and equipment in the building.
- Maintains records for preventative maintenance of motors, equipment, vehicle and gasoline powered equipment.
- Operates equipment as required, including snow removal and grounds equipment.
- Responds to emergency requests at any time, such as snow removal, flooding conditions (burst pipe), etc. and performs necessary duties such as snow removal.
- Supervises staff during emergencies such as snow removal, etc.
- Has ultimate responsibility for school building on weekends and holidays with respect to the proper operation of mechanical equipment and security of the building.
- Performs other management duties as assigned.
- Must have good knowledge of power plant procedures.
- Must know where all shut off valves are located in the building.
- Must check building on weekends and holidays throughout the heating season through the BAS.
- Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment and fuel.
- Regulates heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Must be able to read blueprints.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL:
This position in the Colonial School District is considered an Essential Personnel position. Essential Personnel are required to be at work for emergencies during and outside of the scheduled workday, including weekends and holidays for duties including but not limited to:
- Snow removal
- Flooding in the building(s)
- Response to alarms
- Water damage after a storm
If, for some reason, the district closes or opens on an altered schedule, regardless of the message communicated by the District, you are expected to report to work on time or at the time stated by your supervisor.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
