Chief Privacy Officer

What You’ll Do

Bring your experience as a Chief Privacy Officer to a company that is passionate about protecting the information our customers and employees entrust to us. Principal is looking for a Chief Privacy Officer to lead the ongoing development and implementation of its privacy program. The position reports to the Enterprise Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer.

As the Chief Privacy Officer, you’ll:

  • Provide the vision, strategy, and leadership for a developing enterprise global privacy program in a sophisticated matrixed financial services company. This includes evaluating the existing program and setting priorities to advance the program. Setting long range direction and manage and implement programmatic changes.
  • Oversee and improving the existing privacy program including privacy impact assessments, business practice assessments, training and awareness, privacy notice delivery, regulatory change, vendor due diligence, monitoring and audits, control mapping, etc.
  • Proactively building partnerships and buy-in across the organization to build a privacy first organization that enables privacy by design and default and the protection of personal data.
  • Interpret global, federal and state privacy laws, ensuring the company has appropriate policies, processes and controls to maintain compliance in all jurisdictions. Ensuring the company has appropriate notices, consents, policies, agreements, contractual clauses, as required by law.
  • Provide information about the privacy program and privacy risk to the Board of Directors and Executive Management Group.
  • Lead a team of privacy professionals, including mentoring, coaching, and development guidance. Determining responsibilities for personnel and ensuring the right people are doing the right job.
  • Collaborate with the Information Security, Risk Management, Legal, Compliance, Information Technology and Data Governance departments to identify and control privacy risks; follow key trends, changing industry standards and the latest laws and regulations (in consultation with legal counsel) and make recommendations to address those trends.
  • Supervise the reporting, investigation, and remediation of privacy incidents to ensure that the company is consistent with legal requirements. Resolves when and if privacy incidents require escalation to executive management. Must be familiar with HIPAA, GLBA, NAIC, state and global data breach law requirements.
  • Evolve the privacy champion/designate role throughout the organization.
  • Participate in key enterprise-wide committees and initiatives to provide subject matter expertise and teamwork to minimize privacy risk.

Who You Are

The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced Chief Privacy Officer with experience in a matrixed, multi-faceted financial services organization. We’re looking for someone who will bring operational privacy expertise with outstanding knowledge, skills and experience in regulatory related matters, and strong operational and business process management. In addition, the ideal candidate will have a consistent record of leadership, critical thinking, building positive relationships, and successful collaboration with senior business partners and peers throughout the compliance and legal functions.

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required, and 10+ years relevant experience; JD preferred; IAPP privacy credentials a plus
    • Expert knowledge of global, federal and/or state laws governing data privacy
    • Understanding of industry best practices in privacy and demonstrated success in program evaluation and improvement
    • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
    • Excellent organizational, analytical, problem solving, presentation, project management, written and oral communication skills
    • The ability to build and manage relationships and facilitate collaboration and communication
    • Superior matrix management and partnering skills with the ability to interact and quickly gain credibility and build collaborative working relationships to produce business results
    • Must be results oriented and able to adapt and deal with ambiguous and/or complex situations and manage expectations
    • Basic PC skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
    • Must be able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
    • Travel required: preferrably one week a month in our Des Moines Corporate office if not local.

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range

$174000 – $236000 / year

Work Environment

This role offers the ability for in-office, hybrid (blending both office and remote work in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements. You’ll work with your leader to determine which option may align best based on several factors.
