Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE: This position works to enforcement Court Orders for Child Support and process modifications of Orders when appropriate. The chosen applicant must be familiar with investigative procedures and techniques. Work often requires considerable firmness and tact in dealing with parents. This position requires being resourceful and having the ability to interpret and apply a variety of complex procedures and regulations. This position works under the direction of the Child Support Supervisor. The applicant must be able to work professional with both case participants and other employees.

The Child Support Agent must be human services oriented and possess the ability to interact well with co-workers, clients, and the general public. The agent must respond to disasters as needed in accordance with Montgomery County DSS policy in the event of a natural or man-made disaster or upon the declaration of a state of emergency by the Montgomery County Emergency Management Office.
Examples of Duties
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Collect child support payments through contact with employers or individual case participants
  • Maintain relationships with court system staff, law enforcement agencies and the general public
  • Maintain a caseload in the ACTS system (Automated Collection and Tracking System)
  • Respond to participants questions and concerns
  • Manage monthly reports
  • Interview and negotiate with participants
  • Prepare and present cases in Court; this will include communication with inmates and attorney’s, and will include testifying in Court on a regular basis
  • Generate show cause orders, schedule hearings, prepare court documents
  • Maintain support payment records and ability to calculate arrears
  • Out of town and/or overnight travel for training/conference
  • General knowledge of and ability to use correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and specialized vocabulary; ability to proofread; ability to accurately type
  • General knowledge of basic accounting and record-keeping procedures and their application in the work environment.
  • Ability to record and compile information based on general guidelines.
  • Ability to access client records, forms, and documents in the NCFAST case management system.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment, often dealing with difficult case participants.
  • Ability to work individually or in combination with other staff.
  • Ability to learn and apply a variety of guidelines applicable to the work process.
  • Other duties as may be necessary

Required Qualifications
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or GED and two years experience in eligibility, investigative, judiciary, or legal work that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to maintain a caseload and self assessment requirements set by the State and/or Federal Government or Associates Degree in Business Administration, Paralegal, Accounting, or other closely related degree.

A national background check which includes fingerprinting, and a drug test is required prior to being hired.

Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
Possess or be willing to obtain North Carolina Notary Public

Applicant will complete a typing test and writing prompt at the time of the interview.

Preference will be given to applicants with child support experience.
