Position Description

The City of Tacoma is seeking a qualified, motivated, and highly organized individual to serve as City Clerk! As City Clerk, you will have a vital role in overseeing the City Council’s agenda and business meetings, retaining the official record of all formal meetings of the City Council, and codifying all ordinances into the Municipal Code. You will also serve as the City’s municipal election official and assist in the initiative and referendum process.

As our City Clerk, you will be responsible for attending all meetings of the City Council. You will record and certify all ordinances and resolutions and be the custodian of the City seal and official City records. Your expert oversight will ensure that all proceedings of the City Council, ordinances, and resolutions are filed, indexed, and kept safe, accurate, and on time. You will also provide Notary Public Services to staff and residents for City business, oversee the codification of ordinances into the Tacoma Municipal Code, and accept claims for damages against the City of Tacoma.

In addition to your clerical duties, you will also lead staff in the City Clerk’s Office, plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work of the staff, and conduct municipal elections for active and retired members to the Retirement Board. You will assist in policy development, provide recommendations to legal staff, executive leadership, and the City Council, and oversee records and information management consultation and support to City departments.

As our ideal candidate, you will have advanced administrative support experience and be able to perform duties with frequent exercise of independent judgment. You will have excellent communication and organizational skills and be proficient in relevant City Charter, State laws, and ordinances. You will have a strong knowledge of budgeting and financial management to assist in budget preparations and department budget and administration. Project management skills are essential to oversee municipal elections and committees, boards, and commission processes.

Qualifications
Minimum Education*
Bachelor’s degree in public or business administration or directly related field

Minimum Experience*
5 years including prior municipal experience and 1 year prior at senior, lead and/or supervisory level
