Description
This position is responsible for supervising the operations and maintenance of the Civic Center and Opera House.
Major Duties
- Supervises and directs the daily operations of the Civic Center and Opera House; addresses complaints and resolves problems.
- Manages and directs daily maintenance and cleaning of assigned city facilities; directs staff in the performance of building custodial duties.
- Coordinates with clients to develop floor plans and other plans for upcoming events; directs the setup of the arena and other spaces for events.
- Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel; ensures compliance with safety policies and procedures; reviews employee time records for accuracy and completeness.
- Reviews calendar of events and prepares work schedule for full-time and temporary employees.
- Manages inventory of maintenance supplies, materials, and equipment; makes purchases as needed.
- Purchases food, drinks, equipment, and supplies used in concession stands and bars; sets up for events; maintains related inventory.
- Programs HVAC system for the Civic Center and Opera House; manages automatic lighting systems.
- Assists in the preparation of the bi-annual operating budget; makes recommendations for purchase, repairs, and improvements to facilities.
- Maintains Dothan Civic Center flags.
- Serves as Manager on Duty during events and programs.
- Performs a variety of custodial duties as needed.
- Assists in the loading and unloading of equipment, props, decorations, concessions, etc.
- Monitors bus parking to ensure the safety of visitors and the public.
- Performs related duties.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Civic Center/Opera House Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include OSHA regulations, fire codes, contract requirements, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of varied facility operations and maintenance functions. The unique nature of each event contributes to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to supervise facility operations and maintenance. Successful performance contributes to the success of events and programs.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with co?workers, other city personnel, elected and appointed officials, promoters, entertainers, vendors, performing arts groups, representatives from local schools, and members of the public.
- Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate persons, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
- The work is typically performed in an office and in Civic Center and Opera House facilities. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, irritating chemicals, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over Arena Operations Worker I and Arena Operations Worker II.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and
- Five (5) years recent experience in building cleaning and/or maintenance; and
- Two (2) years recent supervisory experience.
- Associate’s degree from an accredited* college or university in Electronics Technology, Business Administration, or closely related field is preferred.
*Accredited through an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education (CHEA).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid operator driver’s license and an acceptable driving record (PBA09/10/01).
- Employees may work irregular hours, evenings, holidays, overnights, and weekends.
- An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
- Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12)
