Department Overview
The Coworkers of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E’s electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.
Position Summary
The Principal Civil Engineer provides oversight, technical standards, strategy, and implementation support for Electric Transmission engineering related projects, complex problems, and issues. The incumbent provides technical guidance for company engineers on seismic design and qualification of substation equipment. The Principal Civil Engineer may manage major cross-functional projects and initiatives or focus in depth on specific areas of Substation that require engineering solutions.
Job Responsibilities
- Acts as Subject Matter Expert (SME) in various civil engineering areas and provides oversight to less senior engineers.
- Plans, architects and designs complete systems in development. Manages multiple internal and external clients and acts as a top tier of support to less senior engineers.
- Frequently serves as a lead in developing and authoring codes, regulations and/or national standards. Conceives and investigates areas in which electrical or civil engineering precedents are not tested.
- Contributes new designs and techniques that are regarded as major advances in the company and/or industry. Applies broad and extensive business understanding of technical issues and impacts the strategic direction and policies of the company.
- Provides high-level advice and expertise to upper management on an ongoing basis. Leverages expertise and industry involvement to achieve positive results.
- May provide guidance for company engineers on seismic design and qualification of substation equipment as well as support and advice to other company.
- departments related to substation/ transmission seismic design and risk management. May develop and maintain design criteria and national/ industry standards for seismic design of substations.
- May review/ approve and work with equipment suppliers on seismic specifications and qualification. Maintains close working relationships with other utility. Supervisory Responsibility: 0-2 Engineers or Specialists.
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although, we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
A reasonable salary range is:
Annual Minimum: $132,000.00
Annual Maximum: $226,000.00
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
- Ten (10) or more years of experience in civil or structural engineering with emphasis on seismic design.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) License
Desired:
- Master’s Degree in Engineering-Civil or equivalent experience
- Experience in utility operations, electric
- Key contributor whose professional achievements and technical abilities have received company and/or industry recognition
- Expertise in civil engineering concepts, theories and practices
- Depth and breadth of knowledge of civil engineering concepts theories and practices as applied to an electric utility
- Expertise in transmission line design, system operation and T&D planning experiences are pluses
- Ability to produce technical procedures and documentation
- Strong technical and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to take initiative
- Proficient with MS Professional Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point)
- Strong project management knowledge and skills to effectively lead diverse teams and complex projects
