Description
This position will receive a 5% increase July of 2023.
The City of Redding is accepting applications for the position of Clerk in the Recreation Division.
Clerk positions perform work at varying levels of complexity:
- Clerk I- $15.57 – $19.87 per hour: performs a variety of less difficult and routine clerical duties.
- Clerk II- $17.22 – $21.98 per hour: performs a variety clerical tasks of average difficulty.
- Clerk III- $18.89 – $24.11 per hour: performs difficult clerical work, requiring the exercise of considerable initiative and judgment, within the framework of City of Redding department policies and procedures.

- Provide assistance and clerical support.
- Greet the general public and answer telephone calls.
- Type routine correspondence, reports, etc.

Clerk II
- Prepare a variety of materials, i.e., memos, letters, forms, and other documents using typewriter or computer.
- Greet the public and answer inquiries about routine procedures and policies. Answer the telephone and provide information as permitted. Communicate with field personnel via radio or telephone.
- Proofread forms, letters, reports, records, applications, and other materials for accuracy, completion, and conformance with established procedures.
- Process employees’ timesheets on-line or manually.

Clerk III
- Process a variety of forms and other documents calling for review or development of data, and the use of clerical procedural steps calling for thorough knowledge of program structure.
- Act as a liaison with other agencies, City departments or the public with regard to policies and procedures of the division or department in which the position is located.
- Train or assist in the training of employees.
- Process payroll information.

Qualifications we’re looking for
- Knowledge of general office practices and procedures
- Knowledge of operation of standard office machines
- Knowledge of alphabetic and numeric filing procedures
- Ability to interact effectively with the public and employees
- Ability to perform a variety of basic clerical skills, and demonstrate tact, courtesy, and cooperation in handling the public and all those with whom the employee comes into contact in the performance of duties
Education and Experience
- Typical education would include high school diploma, or equivalent.
- Typical experience would include 1-3 years of relevant clerical experience depending on class specification.

Examination Process: An online written examination will be administered.
This recruitment will create an eligibility list and may be used to fill current and future vacancies.
If you are a current City of Redding Employee and took and passed the Clerk examination on or after October 2020, you are not required to retest and may retain your prior score, OR, if you prefer, you may retest to receive a new score. You will not have the option of retesting and keeping the better of the two scores. Your name may remain on the eligibility list for a period of five years before you will be required to test again, unless significant changes are made to the examination. Either way, you must select the appropriate box on the supplemental question that asks to either “Retest” or “Retain” your previous score.
Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:
- Positive past employment references
- Review of a driver history record
- Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 or older)
- Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test
Veteran’s Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating “Honorable Discharge” from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.

Holidays:
An average of thirteen and a half per year. Fire Association covered employees receive a payment in lieu of holidays. Holiday compensation for Redding Peace Officers Association and Redding Police Managers Association employees has been converted to base pay.
Vacation:
Two weeks per year up to the fourth year of service, three weeks up to nine years of service, three and a half weeks up to fourteen years of service, four weeks up to nineteen years of service, four and a half weeks up to twenty-four years of service, five weeks after twenty-four years of service. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU. Part-time and temporary employees may be eligible for some vacation/paid time off benefits.
Sick Leave:
Twelve working days of sick leave are accrued each year. Unused sick leave may be credited toward retirement. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU.
Health Insurance:
Excellent medical, dental, vision, and life for employee and dependent, and long-term disability for employees.
Retirement:
Full-time employees are covered by CalPERS (formula is dependent on hire date and member status in CalPERS) and are not covered under the Social Security System.
Administrative Leave:
Management positions are eligible to receive 40 hours of administrative leave per calendar year as authorized by the department director; additional leave up to 40 hours may be granted by the City Manager.
Deferred Compensation Plans:
Available for interested employees.
Union Dues: Some job classifications are represented by collective bargaining units, the employees of which may choose to join and pay union dues.
Part-Time Retirement Benefit Program:
Part-time, seasonal, and full-time temporary employees either participate in the Social Security System or the PARS Alternate Retirement System depending upon bargaining unit assignment.
