Job Description
- Responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance and repairs of the co-gen plant and auxiliary equipment associated with it.
- Establish and maintain a close professional relationship with all the outside contractors responsible for performing work on the co-generation system, i.e. ConEdison and Fairbanks Morse.
- Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the co-generation electrical system and its interface with the hospital’s electrical distribution system.
- Track energy savings in terms of energy saved and dollars saved.
- Prepare all necessary reports required to communicate the status of the plant and work to be performed, i.e., shutdown reports, safety reports, energy savings reports, etc.
- Observe various meters and gauges in co-generation plant and take appropriate action to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the power plant.
- Monitor report and maintain proper level of supply of all the chemicals used in the co-generation plant. Chemicals include cooling tower chemicals, waste heat boiler chemicals, ammonia for the catalytic converter, and any other chemicals required for the proper operation of the power plant.
- Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the heating, cooling, ventilation, power generation and any other auxiliary equipment associated with the power plant.
- Start, stop, switch over engine generators and associated equipment as appropriate.
- Develop and ensure that a preventive maintenance schedule is followed.
- Ensure that all work such as repacking of valves, changing piping, cleaning and painting in boiler room, lubrication of the boiler room, engines, generators, compressors, pumps and related parts are regularly performed as needed.
- Ensure that the waste heat boilers and catalytic converter are performing within acceptable operating parameters.
- Ensure that all repairs and/or replacement of broken or worn parts, e.g. valves, meters, levels, etc. within the power plant are performed in a timely matter.
- Keep log on power plant’s waste heat boiler, radiators and cooling tower water samples.
- Ensure the proper chemical treatment to waste heat boiler and cooling waters as well as the stand-by generator glycol cooling loops.
- Document all major repair needs and unsafe conditions.
- Ensure that the power plant is kept clean and orderly.
- Assist Plant Operations personnel in performing periodic inspections of mechanical rooms throughout Staten Island University Hospital to ensure proper operation of heat, air conditioning and ventilation and medical support equipment, e.g. vacuum pumps, air compressors, etc
- Maintains 33kV and 5kV substation which includes all associated equipment and also includes switching main breakers for service outages
- Check temperature and pressure gauges periodically and take remedial action as required.
- Assist in maintaining and repairing HVAC controls and associated equipment to maximize efficiency levels in all environmentally controlled areas.
- Ensure that all urgent corrective routine and requisitioned repairs of electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems are performed on a timely basis
- Maintain records, reports, logs, statistics and files, as required.
25. Perform other duties as directed.

Physical Demands: Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to lift and move heavy materials and equipment weighing 100 lbs
Job Qualification
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
- Minimum of three (3) years experience in co-gen plant, required.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in maintenance and repair of HVAC high pressure equipment including centrifugal refrigeration units, cooling towers, pumps, motors and air handling system, required.
- Certificate of Fitness from NYC Fire Department required within (6) months of employment: C-42, A-35, F-60, G-60, G91, G-99
- Read, write and speak English to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

The salary range for this position is $32.43-$33.98/hour
