Coach Team Member – Soccer for Success – Community Youth

The Greater Philadelphia YMCA is seeking part time coaches to instruct our U.S. Soccer Foundation grant funded Soccer for Success program virtually and in-person to elementary and middle school students throughout areas of Philadelphia, PA and the City of Camden, NJ. Coach-mentors will follow the Soccer for Success curriculum to engage youth in physical activity while providing education around nutrition and healthy living either through live virtual sessions or in person at a designated location. The program is designed for participants to engage in 45-90 minutes of soccer, anywhere between the hours of 1:00-6:00 pm, that will include skill based activities and scrimmage style play. Coaches are asked to have availability for at least 3-days a week but can coach up to 5-days a week, if available. All coach-mentors will be trained in the Soccer for Success curriculum prior to implementation.

POSITION PURPOSE

Under general direction provide support and encouragement to assist students in learning the specific progressive or competitive program. Ensure safety and cleanliness of the program area and adherence to all YMCA safety standards and rules.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coaches will be responsible for the setup/breakdown of practice equipment (or set up of virtual practice space when applicable) , instructing soccer activities and curriculum, and supervising players during all sessions.
  • Monitor and maintain a structured and safe practice environment for players to feel safe to participate, physically and mentally
  • Mentor youth about sportspersonship and goal setting. Foster a non-competitive atmosphere with an emphasis on being active and healthy
  • Responsible for recording and submitting player data to the direct supervisor including session attendance and any behavioral concerns.
  • Maintain relationships with the schools’ staff, students, parents, and community members
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and trainings
  • Attend all scheduled seasonal Soccer for Success events and End of Season Celebrations, as scheduled.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • High school education or equivalent (required)
  • Must be 18 years old or older and able to pass a background clearance.
  • Previous experience working with youth in a learning environment
  • Previous soccer experience preferred, but not required
  • Must be able to conduct virtual sessions when needed either from a personal home environment or from the YMCA’s Camden office at time of scheduled shifts.
  • Must be willing to travel to site locations through the city of Camden as scheduled.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word to impart oral information and to convey detailed, spoken instructions to staff, members, children, and volunteers accurately, quickly, and loudly. Ability to perceive the nature of sounds by ear; ability to lift and carry 50-75 pounds; ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling. Ability to move about on foot quickly; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where they actually are and clearly see at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Exposure to high levels of noise and various environmental conditions.

ACQUIRE AND MAINTAIN THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATIONS

  • CPR/AED/O2/First Aid obtained through the American Red Cross (valid 2 years)
  • Requisite OSHA online trainings (valid 1 year unless otherwise noted)
  • Mandated Reporter Training (valid 5 years)
  • Additional training and development specific to your role as reference in onboarding packet.
