Class Title
Coating Technician uses power tools, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, and other traditional tools to apply a surface solution to products bot for aesthetic reasons and for protection. Coating work is also done during repairs of some products. Coating solutions include paint, plastic and varnish, which are applied by dipping or using spray guns or automated painting systems. In the case of automated systems, coating technicians are responsible for setting up the components of the system and monitoring operation for flaws or inconsistencies. They also may do touch-up work once automated processes are complete.
Duties
Coating Technicians work activities involve application of interior or exterior decorative and protective coatings on new and existing buildings and structures; application of specialty coatings such as chlorinated pool coverings, multiple component products and solvents such as different types of acids for paint and graffiti removal; the removal and installation of drywall, including taping and floating, and professional preparation of drywall for the recommended coating application of wall covering and product; proper preparation of substrate to meet the recommended surface coating; stains, finishes and refinishes furniture; applies epoxy paint; hangs wallpaper, applies glazing, spackling, plaster repair and cement work. Erects, removes and works from scaffolding, swing stages, ladders or works from lift trucks, scissor lift, bucket truck or forklift for tasks performed above ground level. Coatings may be applied by brush, spray gun, rollers, sponges, cloth, or by hand to create finished special effects. Duties may include creation of new signs or renovation of existing signs.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High School Diploma or GED required along with two to four years of vocational training or on the job training in a coating application trade
2. Demonstrated ability to communicate and apply craft techniques, processes and principles; ability to use independent decision-making judgment concerning maintenance and repairs; ability to apply shop mathematics and to interpret written instructions; spatial discrimination; form perception eye-hand coordination; and finger and hand manual dexterity.
3. Valid State Vehicle Operator’s License
4. Hold or be able to qualify for such certificates or licenses as may be required by federal, state or city government.
Physical Requirements: Employees in this classification stand, walk, sit, crawl, climb ladders, stairs and scaffolding, maintain balance, lift/carry up to 50 pounds without assistance or up to 100 pounds with assistance, uses wrists or hands repetitively in a brushing motion or while applying pressure, use both hands, arms, feet and legs simultaneously, stoop/bend, reach overhead, push/pull, have dexterity of fingers/hands and muscular coordination, have color vision or the ability to distinguish shades, speak clearly, hear normal conversations and see small details.
Work Environment: Employees in this classification work inside and outside, in changing temperatures including temperatures below 50 degrees and over 90 degrees, dry atmospheric conditions, poorly ventilated areas, inadequate lighting, wet or damp areas, confined spaces, at heights using ladders or scaffolding, with electrical hazards and machinery with moving parts, fumes, allergenic dust, chemicals, odors, toxic materials, in direct contact with the public, students, and other personnel and operate a motor vehicle in order to conduct work.
